Reflection On Student Service Learner

During these nine weeks, I had a really interesting time being a Student Service Learner at my school. At times, working with the students in the class was pretty fun and a lot like working with your own friends. However, there were multiple times where it was completely difficult to work with them. Even though I had a short experience with the class for only half of the semester, I have learned what it takes to be an excellent, and successful, SSL.
Of my first days in Mrs. Pfaltzgraff’s class, I was pretty much nervous, but excited: I was actually going to help my fellow classmates! The subject of the class was Geometry, something I have learned a few years back when I was a sophomore. However, there was catch to this job: most of the students

I realized that I actually have the skills to be leader, just by helping others out. I also realized that I have enough kindness and confidence to show the students with appropriate behavior and manners when in the classroom. To me, the most meaningful experience during my time as an SSL was most likely when a student that I was working with for a couple weeks became a good friend to me and got everything right on a test. It was the his first A so far, so he was very surprised. I felt that taking time and trying to help him review for that test really did the trick for him. When I first did this career field, I really didn’t know what to expect, but I read the rubric so I can be as polite and deferential as possible. Now that I have gone nine weeks with this job, I learned a lot about what it takes to be an SSL. You need to the patience to help a student out, even if they behave terribly on you. Sometimes they’ll realize that what they are doing is wrong once you start ignoring their verbal violence, and they’ll respect you since they actually do need help. I have had that happen to me during my experience, and the student is a bit more thankful for me helping them with an assignment or something. I feel that she realizes that she won’t get any better at anything if she gets some

Kreilein was trying to teach them. Since I had taken the same class last year I was able to help this student understand the formulas and questions and now they are ahead of the rest of the class. They just need a little extra help that Mr. Kreilein couldn’t provide because he had other students to think about as well. During my internship I have learned many valuable skills that I would have originally not learned with my class work at school. I have learned how that being able to be patient and not get frustrated when someone isn’t understanding you.…

After doing it week after week I improved and started to understand how to better help those kids. I learned that this class worked best when I would let them share something enjoyable about themselves for every class. One week I was not able to go the guidance class and the teacher came up to me and said the students were devastated and missed me. Knowing this also helped me in this classroom it helped me know they enjoy my company and are benefiting from my lessons. I also got to spend one on one time with…

I was really worried that I would be put back in regular math, so I took responsibility for myself and got extra help from my teacher and managed to accomplish all A’s on the consecutive tests and end the trimester with almost an A in that class. I’m so thankful that I was taught to be responsible for myself in cheer or else I may not have gotten the same outcome. Out of everything I have been taught these years, the most important skill I picked up from being a Junior Trojan is to never give up. During this season our team did amazing, but there will sporadically be those off days when things don’t always go as intended. On those days, it’s imperative to not give up on yourself and remind everyone that even though it may not have been our best day, it’s important that we remember that we are all talented, and very fortunate to even be where we are.…

I hate that my students will be moving on to first grade next year, because I can’t teach them in the classroom anymore. Luckily, I work at Chase Street, so I will still be able to be with my students that attend the after school program. Each of my students has individually made a lasting impression on me, not only as a teacher, but as a person and a student myself. My relationship with Ms. Evans has grown profoundly. It began as me just being her after school co-worker to me being an active part of her classes learning several times a week.…

The first week or so was pretty lonely sitting in a classroom waiting for people to show up but finally they did! I definitely started out by getting to know them and being friendly. I had great students in my tutoring sessions they were all a lot of fun and happy to be there. I have taken the classes that I was tutoring so it was nice to help the other students get familiar with the classroom. I personally know can be overwhelming to walk in to a big classroom full of unfamiliar bones, models, and equipment but I enjoyed helping them get comfortable and learning from the classroom.…

When I first started my internship, finding my role in the classroom was challenging. I began my first days as an observer and tutored during recess. Further into the week, I decided to step out of my comfort zone, challenge myself, and began to take on the role as the teacher, and that is when I began to grow as a person. Sixth Ward Middle School gave me the opportunity to work with children, which is something that I truly enjoy. Upon completion of my internship, not only did I grow as an educator, but I also realized the passion I have for working with children.…

This was the first field experience I was able to participate in student’s hands on. I was able to help in answering questions they had on an assignment. I was amazed to see how influential I was to them and how much they learned just by opening up their concerns about what they were learning. I could really see the motivation was there, but they had no motivator. It was rewarding to see the improvements at the end of the day and the smiles on these students faces.…

After the first week of class I wasn’t nervous anymore and was excited about the semester. I really enjoyed being at Sherman Elementary because it was my first time being in an intercity school. I built a great relationship with my cooperating professional and the students in the class. I had a lot of fun, but learn a lot this semester.…
