“Pros and cons of Allowing Digital Devices in the Classroom” by The Room 241 Team wrote about how phones at school help with social learning. “ Social learning is a great way for students to share information, thoughts, and ideas on a subject. Properly focused, in a social learning situation made possible by digital devices.” The Room 241 Team got this information from a blog by Concordia University Portland. This causes students to talk to other students they usually wouldn’t talk to. It also helps students with projects or group activities, since they are interacting with more students that could help/give them more information on a subject. Professor Clay Shirky states, “Anyone distracted in class doesn’t just lose out on the content of the discussion, they create a sense of permission that opting out is ok, and, worse, a haze of second-hand distraction for their peers.” This could be challenged, because even if they are getting distracted in class, it could be for a good reason. What if something happened and their family member were calling or texting them to tell them personally.
