Therefore, in this class the professors could educate first year students on how to properly cite sources and use proper college level writing techniques. This would help to decrease the levels of plagiarism. We know from Ariely’s research that people who have constant reminders about the honor code and cheating are not going to cheat (Ariely…
MLA format was expected to be known through all my past classes and I’ve been so accustomed to using it, I didn’t expect to be surprised reading through Purdue Owl. On the contrary, I did learn a few interesting things that I haven’t been implementing when formatting my essays. When citing my sources, usually my main focus would be the Works Cited page, however the in-text citations have equal importance. Often times, I would save my citations for last, causing me to miss a few points that were maybe hidden, for example a paraphrase rather than an obvious quote. Purdue Owl broke down every element to how to properly cite an essay which was a great refresher.…
In her article “Plagiarism: A Problem For WSU Students,” Brandi Trapp discusses some things that cause people to plagiarize, the consequences of plagiarism, and the steps college instructors take to confront the issue. Before discussing plagiarism, a person needs to first define and explain what plagiarism means and what qualifies as an act of plagiarism. According to the given definition in Brandi’s writing, plagiarism is “any activity that tends to compromise the academic integrity of the institution… [by] any act of intentionally using or attempting to use [or providing] unauthorized materials, information, or assistance in any academic exercise” and that “…a student can be accused of plagiarism if they get any information…
3.2 Sampling I found my research participants through snowball sampling. Snowball sampling is a well established practice of asking respondents to recommend other possible research participants. Which in my case, the respondents willingly helped to share my survey link. The big advantage of this method is that it increases the number of respondents because people become more positive towards a researcher and are more willing to cooperate when introduced to someone they know. With snowball sampling, participants in the research are more likely to know each other and thus have a bigger chance of sharing a particular background and characteristics that are likely to colour their views and opinions.…
Lakesha, I am in agreement that all types of Plagiarism is going to be hard to avoid but we will learn the correct way to format our essays by studying the information that has been provided. The APA format has been a new experience for me also, never really considered how much went into writing properly, but feel that we will reap great rewards after completing. Also, I feel you have the right idea, that practicing on all papers written will help us to learn the proper formatting.…
Pro Point Two, by having set standards on format, students are able to learns skills such implementing citations and research into their writing. The Texas FFA places many requirements on the manuscripts submitted for contests, for example requiring all manuscripts to use APA for style and references. If students do not use APA formatting or execute it effectively they will loose points or receive no points for that section of the grading. While the qualifying contests in the FFA require that students use APA formatting, many open public speaking contests require MLA formatting when registering manuscripts. This leads to the most competitive students in the public speaking circle either writing multiple versions of their speeches with appropriate formatting or, as I did, constantly revising the…
24. You use appropriate language, avoiding wordiness, while giving the reader all necessary information in strict APA style. I think I would have somewhat trouble with this one because In the past when I was here APA style confused me a lot when it came down to reference. I would usually just copy and paste the link or try to put it in the format and it still didn’t work so it kind of cost me a lot in my classes and my grades.…
A common example of plagiarism is paraphrasing a work and passing it off as one’s own thoughts or ideas. This is an example of plagiarism because although one may have not used another persons exact words, he or she did take someone else’s ideas without giving them credit for them. A less common example of plagiarism occurs when a student submits a paper or assignment to two different classes, thus satisfying two different assignments without the permission of the professor (PPT).Other examples include, permitting one’s work to be submitted by another individual whom is passing it off as their own work, turning in someone else’s test as ones own, and blurring the line between one’s own ideas and words from another source (BSU). Plagiarism is a serious offense that is not taken lightly by the NCAA or the college that student attends. The NCAA is considering the integration of harsher academic integrity policies for the Division one level (Dr. Alexander’s…
I had no idea what APA format was or how to cite properly. However, the APA citations links that my professor provided were very useful and helped me be successful with the rest of my essays. The videos guided me step by step and were very simple to understand other different type of formats such as MLA, and Chicago. Another resource that was very helpful, were the online class discussions. Online discussions not only helped me interact with my classmates, but helped me broaden my knowledge about the material.…
AP Language and Composition would be tremendously beneficial in my high school career, but it would also be valuable in my future career in college. Having AP English on my transcript would help prestigious colleges such as Stanford consider me as a viable student to attend their college. This AP class will benefit me beyond high school for college applications and college class work, which all demand the ability to properly execute a sophisticated written piece. This preparation for extended education includes different aspects of writing, such as being able to properly cite a source, outline an educated essay, write analysis on specific evidence, or write an opinionated literary piece without being exclusive. All these skills are taught in depth, enabling students to cover vast realms of different writing scenarios.…
My experiences working with APA and MLA have been useful. I have learned to properly communicate a message using these formats. I did not know much about these formats until English Composition I—my Professor started us on APA for a couple of weeks and that made the MLA learning process much easier. Writing in these documentations has opened my horizons and has educated me to speak about a project with more of a choice. I am majoring in Pre-Nursing…
Throughout this course, I have learned several things, from how to write a rhetorical analysis to how to properly cite a quote. Prior to entering English 121 I had no idea what a rhetorical analysis even was. Then after that, I did not know how to properly cite a quote in MLA 8 format. Including learning how to write, I learned about different sides of very controversial subjects from sexual and gender identity though, the biggest problem I saw was the rate that our U.S. military service men commit suicide at. Finally, I learned how to properly format an essay for an example, this is the introduction paragraph and the following paragraphs will be body paragraphs!…

Entering graduate school, I have personally had mixed thoughts on taking a writing course for my first semester. The increased demand for scholarly writing skills in the healthcare profession allows for improvement in many nursing positions. “Some individuals take to writing easily and with enjoyment”, but “for others the process is quite difficult” (Dexter, 2000). I am one to admit, for me, writing is not effortless. I feel that I have room for advancement, not only with APA formatting, but with writing skills, as a whole.…
Furthermore, academic institutions have stated plagiarism as a grave academic offense. In fact, universities and colleges such as George Brown College (GBC) and Harvard University (HU) have developed plagiarism policies to make students aware about its consequences. Even though both policies can explain what can be considered as plagiarism and provide tips how to avoid it, these policies may have different approaches about what would be a suitable sanction for plagiarism. As we will see, Harvard University policy has more severe consequences for students found guilty of plagiarism than George Brown College.…
