They must never feel left out or unworthy of becoming the most successful person they can possibly be. Just because they are starting from the bottom does not mean that their entire lives will be spend in the bottom. The Teen Lead program run and funded by Gary Matus offers many critical resources that help the youth with college concerns, financial advice, work opportunities, resumes, tutoring, and much more. The problem however, is that it only exists in downtown La. If some how the program can expand to all YMCAS and later to all schools; elementary, middle schools, and high schools then I am certain that it will help produce far more educated individuals and put them out in the world to become an inspiration for kids sharing similar upbringings.…

My Healthy People 2020 objective is to increase the proportion of children and adolescents aged 2 years to 12th grade who use a computer or play computer games outside of school (for non-school work) for no more than 2 hours a day. This is a very broad objective and I haven’t completed my needs assessment at this time but I think I will probably focus on younger children not adolescents. 1. “Selling” this program to meet this Healthy People objective would not be the target for this objective but would be parents, teachers, daycare caretakers or individual who run afterschool programs.…

Moreover, I have a moderate amount of knowledge about financial literacy as a current member of the Young Investors program at UBC, which may be beneficial when focusing on Coast Capital Saving’s “for youth, by youth” approach. Finally, my experiences as a Peer Tutor at JN Burnett Secondary and Math and Literacy Event Volunteer at the Richmond Public Library, have augmented my abilities in teaching and working with youth.…

MPH Competencies In the beginning I visualized opportunities for the YMCA such as: introducing new communication and education avenues such as Pinterest, taking a public health systems approach with Missouri State University to encourage use of Activetrax and the importance of nutrition, find realistic opportunities for the YMCA to enrich the nutrition education part of Activetrax with basic statistical methods, apply research principals to class count data, and develop public health interventions to evaluate Activetrax. These opportunities are mentioned as part of the expected MPH competencies for the internship plan and so they as well as three Discipline-Specific Competencies and three Interdisciplinary Core Competencies will be in the following…

I want to be in the Leader's In Training program because Camp Mendocino is teaching youth how to live a healthy life at a young age. This camp helps the upcoming youth live in reality instead of the virtual world and ties into my overall life goal of helping Americans understand what it means to live a healthy life physically and mentally. This is important to me because I have dealt with depression and how unhappy I was with myself as a person. From the negative experience I’ve had with depression I don't want any child or teen feel like they are unworthy of the life they are living. By working with Camp Mendocino I will be helping the youth understand how to have a healthy state of mind by encouraging campers to deal with negative feelings…

Communication is of essential importance in any workplace, relationship, and gathering, which creates efficient leadership within a group. Towards the closing of my junior year, I was elected to be one of the few student board members to my school’s National Honor Society. Achieving board member status for this renowned society of students is an eye-opening experience. Adapting to the responsibility that a highly respected board member carries of such a prestigious group truly distinguishes differences between the ordinary member and those who collectively lead the organization. From coordinating induction ceremonies for incoming members, to communicating with local providers for community service events, being a representative of…

The YMCA or Young Men’s Christian Association is more than the average gym and swim, more than a place for children to take swim lessons and learn a sport. The YMCA is not only for summer camps and gymnastics. The Young Men’s Christian Association is a movement. The movement is there to promote Christian values and principles in order to strengthen communities. “The YMCA works to bring social justice and peace to young people and their communities, regardless of religion, race, gender or culture”(Who…

Everyone knows the YMCA song, but everyone doesn’t have the same connection to it that I do. This building never contained one life changing event for me, but it has been a pivotal place in my life. A place I’ve referred to as home many times, the YMCA has shaped who I am as a man. This pivotal spot is where I suffered my first traumatic injury, changing how I do things for the rest of my life; but also was the place I went to when coping with family incidents. This institution, in particular the basketball gym, helped me find myself, changing my life forever.…
