Adaptation and resilience Adaptation is sometimes used as an explanation of how good quality of life is maintained in old age. In the Berlin Ageing Study, it is described in terms of selection, compensation and optimization. According to this theory, in old age, better quality of life can be achieved by trimming down activities, goals or domains of functioning to those which are most salient to one's life (selection); replacing losses with alternatives to achieve goals (compensation); and maximizing one's selected resources (optimization).
