International Placement

Acquiring an international placement is a major goal of mine. It would present me with an invaluable opportunity to cultivate unique skills needed for a future career in the international social work field. This prompts me to pursue the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees’ Community-Based Protection Unit (UNHCR CBP) Geneva, Switzerland placement and the Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) internship in Chennai, India. The UNHCR CBP placement is my top choice however, for several reasons. Primarily I am attracted to this placement’s impactful services and its capacity to challenge my macro skills to the fullest. I believe I am an adaptable person with success in overcoming challenges of limited resources, financial constraints, and the unfamiliarity that comes with a new endeavor. In regard to emotional maturity, I am confident in my ability to understand and manage my emotions. I approach most aspects of life with a sense of responsibility, perseverance, and finally, and just as essential, a sense of humor. It is my hope that I have conveyed to you in my examples above how I have been able to cope with difficult situations in the past and made the most of it. I feel these skills would be invaluable to my internship placement at the UNHCR CBP Unit and Switzerland. As a volunteer in Georgia, my classroom essentially had four walls, the floor, and a ceiling. I became accustomed to working with limited resources and improvising activities on the spot, such as altering a lesson plan when the electricity goes out in the middle of class or when wild animals make their way into the classroom. Additionally, my service at Caritas and the Multicultural Refugee Coalition (MRC) in Austin, where I aid those seeking support by connecting them to local resources and helping them build lifelong skills, periodically tests my problem-solving abilities as I serve clients. My level of skill and understanding are enriched by my direct work with clients at RST and at my volunteer organizations, allowing me to truly connect and empower
