Accountability In The Us Army Accountability is an essential characteristic in all aspects of one's life. A responsible person can be relied upon by others to get a job done without blaming others for any problems he or she encounters and will therefore be the first choice for a promotion. People who are considered reliable, honest, and responsible will be trusted by the people around them to do what needs to be done. However, such a reputation can easily be sullied, so it is important to remain committed to accountability. Accountable people are also more confident and self-satisfied, so accountability is clearly the right choice.

Scott Nielsen, a project engineer with the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center, said the current system for fuel accountability and visibility in a tactical environment has areas in need of improvement. The Army stores fuel in large collapsible tanks, with capacities up to 210,000 gallons that can be connected to create a storage and distribution system point holding more than one million gallons. To determine the fuel system's volume, Soldiers use a level string and yardstick to measure the tank's height that corresponds to a strapping chart. Each height increment corresponds to a specific volume. Collapsible tank systems, which have been used since the late 1970s, present challenges in accurately determining the volume, Nielsen said.
