In the performance of his duty he cannot expect victory as a necessary outcome of the war. He may get defeated or severely injured or even might be killed by his opponents. But unmindful of that he should perform his duty of fighting with the aim but not with the expectation of winning the war because he has control only on his performance but the outcome of the war depends on innumerable factors that are beyond his control. If he refrains from fighting thinking about all possibilities of the outcome of the war then he becomes one who is not doing his bounden duty that is expected of him as per his role in life and this is not in accordance with Dharma that is all through stressed by our ancient Sanaathana Dharma that lays down the rules and norms of conduct of one and all. It is not because our ancients did not have the capacity or the brains to invent things that increased the material welfare of people . They were not only great philosophers and spiritual masters they were also greatest of scientists in all fields including medicine, Psychology, astronomy, astrology and so on, who could invent anything that man desired. Very many ancient discoveries and inventions which the ancient sages have made and that the modern scientists are able to discover and invent today with sophisticated machinary are found to be scientifically perfect and valid even by modern scientific standards. In very ancient times every one could get what they required for a comfortable living and they were satisfyed with whatever they could get without having undue desire for any material comforts.
Again, all the teachings of Lord Krishna in this Scripture are for realising the ultimate goal of peace and happines. Perhaps Lord Krishna made it clear that if one wants to achieve this goal then he should not entertain too much of desire for anything that may end in sorrow and peacelessness for one. Desire as such is not bad. It is because of the desire for permanent happiness, peace and freedom that even the spiritual aspirant undertakes the spiritual
