Nancy White Reflection

On Wednesday, September 13th, I attended a reading in the gallery. The reading was done by professors and while attending this reading I learned multiple things. I didn’t know that there are many professors that do outside writing and some of them get their writings published. I guess I just assumed that they only taught. This was very interesting for me because it wasn’t only English teachers that write outside of school. For example, speech teachers also get their work published. Professor Nancy White is a speech teacher, and she has three small poems books published. This gives me a lot more reassurance in my education here and it helped me decide whose personality or work I liked. By listening to the reading I felt like I got an insight on …show more content…
I learned that it’s okay to write wherever you are. I also learned to be confident in my work. This man that read was confident in his work and read it beautifully. This is important to me because although I do enjoy writing, it is not a strong point of mine. If I am writing about something that I love and I feel passionate about then I feel like I do just fine and I don't feel as nervous about my work. Not one speaker that I watched present their work seemed nervous about their work, everyone seemed confident. Although I did enjoy listening to the specific readings, my main takeaway from attending this Writer's Project session was that writing doesn't have to only be educational nor done for educational purposes. I learned that what you write down on a piece of paper could be about anything as long as it means something to you. This was eye-opening for me because it makes me want to take out a piece of paper and just enjoy the thoughts being written down. I learned many things by going to this reading and I plan to attend more because I like to listen to the professors read, just as much as they enjoy presenting it to us. I hope each time I attend I learn something

Living Writers has introduced me to literary professionals that changed my way of thinking. I don’t consider myself a strong writer by any means. However, meeting Danielle Evans, Laila Lalami and Andre Dubus III made me realize being a great writer is just about being human. It’s possible with pure honesty, curiosity and bravery. Meeting Laila and Andre in person humanized them in a way I never expected.…

This semester I feel that I have somewhat improved as a writer. The first thing from this class that has helped me was the peer reviews. They have decreased the nervousness that I used to feel when I would ask people to help and for suggestions. The second thing that impacted me as a writer was the discussion post about different writing styles and how different people had different processes. The one that impacted me the most was the video about David Sedaris.…

When I signed up for a writing course, I did not expect to learn much more than simple techniques for writing, but this course provided more than that. Throughout the semester my entire outlook on our government and how the institutions are run in this country was changed. There are many things that contributed to the growth of my knowledge. For example, the assignments and the book Twilight of the Elites. These forced me to look beyond the institutions and recognize the complexity of the failures.…

In all of my time as a District 54 student, I was never more impacted by one individual than by Mrs. Michelle Burke. In eighth grade I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to enroll in the nearly brand new PLTW STEM class at Jane Addams Junior High. The class was spectacular for me, as I was formally studying a subject I had always wanted to learn more about. I was spellbound by the fact I was able to design an object on the computer, such as a holiday ornament or a toy car, and hold it in my hands after it had been 3D printed. I have always been enamored by the power to create, and the class let me take it one step further.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…

May 8, 2017 was the first day of college for me after being out of high school for 18 years. I am attempting to pursue a nursing degree and I am required to take 8 pre-requisites before I can apply to the nursing program. I decided to take English 111 first but only because that is what my advisor suggested. I have never liked reading or writing and therefore was not looking forward to taking this class. Additionaly, this semester was like a rollercoaster because Mrs. Patrick had to condense 16 weeks of work into 8 weeks because of the summer semester being shorter than the fall and spring semesters.…

I can also notify other employees, supervisors and clients of my progress in a project through a progress report. The Saint Mary’s seminar classes are so unlike traditional teacher-centered learning. The Western Tradition II focuses on three learning goals; shared inquiry, critical thinking, and written and oral communication. These three learning goals really help students explore the Western Tradition by examine the themes written by the authors we discussed. De Las Casas, Rene Descartes, and Voltaire really influenced the way I thought about how our culture started and the major flaws we stay face today within our society. If everyone read and discussed the themes that these authors purposefully wrote in their text maybe people would have realized the underlying issues that have been around for forever have solutions.…
