The children, as expected, were full of energy and extremely excited to try everything and anything that Jumpstart had to offer. Even though my Jumpstart training instantly kicked in as I prepared to read to the children, assist them in center time, and support them in circle time, I was still very nervous about how to connect with the children on a personal level. I wanted the children to see me as an authority figure, but also not just as a strange adult in a red shirt that comes in a few times each week. It took me a couple sessions before I knew for sure how I could best interact with each individual child. During every session, corps members try their hardest to make the children enthusiastic about reading books, discovering new vocabulary, writing their own names, and more. I feel like a very big goal of Jumpstart is to make children life-long passionate learners. It is important to recognize this because it is a driving force for most everything done in Jumpstart! Every Jumpstart member should demonstrate the value of "determination," not just because it is a virtue that every role model should possess, but also because it is such an integral part of life, whether one is in an academic setting or just anywhere in the real world. Even though every Jumpstart member may face an obstacle at one point or another, determination will lead to perseverance, which will ultimately lead to success and long-term impact. Connection is also an important value for all Jumpstart members to demonstrate, because substantial partnerships and relationships would enhance the overall experience of Jumpstart for all that are involved. Strong team efforts would surely triumph individual efforts, because they are more efficient. After all, the wise maxim "Two heads are better than one" proves true to this day.
