I knew no one. Honestly, I was making more enemies than friends; it was as if I could not catch a break. Until April 1st 2013, when I met 2LT Justin Sisson. 2LT Sisson and I embarked on the journey to Afghanistan together as the Torch party. When we began our journey, he understood that I was an NCO, who just wanted the chance to prove herself in an organization that was less than welcoming. 2LT Sisson instantly allowed me to take charge of the eight personnel element moving forward regardless of my gender; he only saw rank. As we moved forward on our deployment I learned that 2LT Sisson was only 23, however, had a presence about him that only a seasoned CPT would have displayed. His persona was always professional and ready to listen. Normally, I would not talk about my weaknesses or shortcoming with anyone especially from my unit. I thought it would give them ammo to knock on my abilities. However, my legacy leader was not selfish or judgmental. He never said a bad thing about anyone. Unwittingly, I decided that I would open up and talk about how I felt as a leader in the

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

Being an INFJ female leader in the military goes against many of the established social norms that are ingrained in our military warrior ethos. Military leaders are taught from an early age to fight and win without giving much regard to introversion, intuitiveness, and feeling. In fact, the only acceptable trait that I seem to possess as military leader is that of judging. My persona fights an epic battle every day as I feel the pressures of having to force myself to be extroverted and to lean towards thinking versus feeling each day that I serve. This has forced me to be one person at home and another person at work.…

I felt 10 feet tall walking into the S-1 for in processing with my green dress uniform but tall that motivation went down the drain, the ghost of my language barrier and jokes about height continue hunting me. Once again, jokes about my accent and height were my daily treatment by many of the Soldiers. There was not a single day that my Sergeant did not listen to a complaint from me about my experience, but he provided resilience and challenges me not let those comments discourage me from reaching my goals. He set me up for two goals, winning the Soldier of the Quarter and earning my first badge, the Air Assault Badge.…

I was an eighteen year old straight out of high school, signing a dozen dotted lines to go defend the United States of America.
