Purchasing or rescuing a dog is a lot like adopting a baby. When a parent raises their child, they see their child make many mistakes, they help their child learn, grow, and move on from those mistakes, and they ultimately see their child become a mature, wise, and compassionate individual. Raising a fur baby is much of the same process. When owners adopt a puppy, it is essentially years of the same commitment and responsibility. An owner teaches their dog what is right and wrong, disciplines them when they make mistakes but praises them when they do the right thing, and supplements their dog’s growth into becoming an enlightened, wise dog. They also must take care of the same basic responsibilities involved in raising a child, such as potty-training, obedience training, making sure they are fed and loved, and taking care of their health. The time, effort, and love it takes to make sure all of those things have been taken care of breeds a perpetual loving bond between human and dog, much the same as the bond between parent and child. Emotionally, dogs are always there to listen to their owners in times of need and supplement their owner’s good days with their whimsy. The love dogs have for their owners is one that cannot be broken easily, even if their owners transgress. The responsibility involved in raising a dog is similar to that of raising a child, which is why dogs so often are viewed as a member of the family.
