For as long as I can remember, I have had an inquisitive nature about the world around me, asking questions about anything and everything. Many of these I asked my grandfather, who began his career as a general surgeon in the late 1940s. As a child, he intrigued me with exciting stories about attending medical school during World War II and the advancing field of medicine. By highlighting an unusual ailment, the complex steps he took to cure it, and the gratification he felt afterwards, he breathed life into his stories to both captivate and enchant me. He portrayed medicine as an exciting, heroic profession in which one always finds a cure, leaving me fantasizing about someday following in his footsteps.

My grandfather, mindful of my age, knew the day would come when I would develop my own views on the complexities of life, death, and the role of medicine. I came to the confirmed realisation that medicine was the right choice for me after I organised work experiences at places ranging from a hospital to a care home to a GP surgery. I experienced the diversity of being a doctor; not simply prescribing drugs or carrying out surgery but giving empathy, compassion and effective after-care that establishes a trustworthy doctor-patient relationship. I saw doctors communicating in challenging situations, such as treating patients suffering from severe depression due to terminal illnesses; sensitivity, integrity and communication were key for effective care. I learned how important the doctor - patient relationship is and that patients need treatment in a holistic manner; a doctor's skills must be flexible…

Wystan Hugh Auden, an Anglo-American poet, once said “A doctor, like anyone else who has to deal with human beings, each of them unique, cannot be a scientist; he is either, like the surgeon, a craftsman, or, like the physician and the psychologist, an artist. This means that in order to be a good doctor a man must also have a good character, that is to say, whatever weaknesses and foibles he may have, he must love his fellow human beings in the concrete and desire their good before their own.” The field of medicine had always captivated and aroused my interest. Entering medicine simply is a youthful dream. I don’t know if it is all the knowledge that come with it or the sense of achievement that attract me the most.…
