Why I Volunteer At Rock Canyon Elementary School Classroom

Improved Essays
For my twenty hours of service, I volunteered in an elementary school classroom. My mom works at Rock Canyon Elementary, so I have volunteered there on and off for the last 4 years. My favorite place to be is with my old fourth grade teacher, Lynne Harrington. We have stayed in touch since fourth grade and she has become one of my best friends. I learn a lot from her and I love watching her interact with the students in her class. A lot of the time I was grading papers, helping small groups of students struggling in different areas, running errands, and on occasion, helping Lynne teach the lesson. On Mondays and Wednesdays I was there in the mornings, and Tuesdays and Thursdays I was there in the afternoon. Since I do not have college courses …show more content…
I have had lots of fun times with the students in Mrs. Harrington’s class, but nothing super memorable. The routine was always the same. But when I went in to volunteer sometime last week, the shyest person in the class came up and gave me a hug and thanked me for the help I had given her in math. This young woman had only spoken to me when I asked her a question. She never raised her hand in class. She never spoke to her classmates. I do not know if she has friends in other classes she talks to or if she is just alone most of the time. To have her say anything to me, let alone hug me, felt like a miracle. That was the moment I felt I made a real difference in that little girl’s life. Even though I completed my 20 hours long ago, I continue to volunteer with these precious children because I love it so much. Each day more of the kids come up to hug me when I walk into the classroom. Each day I feel a little closer to them and a little more anxious to see them succeed. Each day I care about them more. I think that is why I am so interested in Elementary Education and eventually becoming an elementary school teacher. I want that experience every day. I want to be able to see the progress they make during the year and celebrate their little victories with them and be there for them when they do not live up to their own expectations. I want those experiences to happen to me more than just this …show more content…
They lift my spirits every moment I am with them. It has not all been smooth sailing. Some of the kids still are not too sure what to think of me. They cannot decide if they like me or not. But I love every one of them. They have incredible abilities and strengths, both academically and outside of the classroom. I have learned so much from them. They teach me patience, kindness, acceptance, and selflessness. They are so enjoyable to be around. I have so much fun with them. I know that if I chose this career path, it will be one I can do well. It will be one in which I will make a difference and brighten my students’ lives. It will be hard. There are always kids that are challenging and parents that are overprotective and other issues to deal with. But even if I only impact one kid like Lynne Harrington has impacted me, that will make me feel like my contributions were worthwhile. I loved my project, and like I said earlier, I will continue going into that classroom because it is one of my favorite places to be. I want to spend all the time I can there. I want those kids to know that I am watching out for them, that I am cheering for them, and that I will be there for them. I want to continue to watch them grow and change and learn and become. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to get involved with these children and I

I know the road ahead will be long and difficult, but it will be worth it once I get to the end. I know teaching is my passion because I have talked about working with children since I was young. It is cliché, but I truly want to be able to make a difference in as many lives as I can. I have found comfort in the fact that even if I end up disliking teaching in the classroom, I know there are many other options out there for me. Museum education and government jobs with ODJFS are just two options of many that I could get into and still have a positive impact on many children’s lives.…

Bodie 's classroom I 've been able to learn a lot about how to be an effective teacher. I need to have a positive attitude towards myself so I will be able to have a positive attitude towards others and relate to what my students are feeling. Training to be a teacher will not automatically make me a Level 3 teacher, but from watching the methods Mrs. Bodie uses, I hope to one day achieve that level of excellence. And although I feel as if I would do well with classroom management, I know there is still plenty more to learn. The chance I 've been given to work with such an effective educator has encouraged me to aspire towards that goal as well.…

During my senior year she let me assist in teaching and tutoring her 8th grade math class, which I absolutely fell in love with I believe that her teaching had an impact on me choosing this field of work. She is one of the most inspirational teachers I know and I’m glad that I’ll get to share her story. Susan Raleigh has been teaching for over 37 years in the Little River school district and that’s probably why she is so good at it. In those 37 years, she has taught sixth, seventh, and eight grade language arts, literature and math every single year. She has also dabbled in PE and health for a few years for sixth, seventh, and eight graders.…
