The Cambridge dictionaries define food as something that people and animals eat, or plans absorb, to keep them alive. By focusing on that, we can imagine how important food is for our body and health. Obviously, it has sources; since there are eaten by people, it has taste too, and finally, it contains many nutrients essential for our body and health. Foods are obtained from two main things: plants and animals. Most foods have their origin from plants. We have thousands of plants growing on the earth at different places according to the plant needs. The human beings have just selected some of them to be considered as food. Those plants have several types, such as cereal grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits. Among the cereal grains, we have for example: rice, wheat, barley, rye, corn, buckwheat, and others cereal grains. Among the legumes or pulses, we have beans, pea’s broad beans, peanut, and others. Among the vegetables, we have potatoes (potato, taro, sweet potato, yam and …show more content…
Although, we have five principal types of taste in animals’ mouth, specifically human: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, umami. The sweetness is usually caused by a type of simple sugar like glucose or fructose. Most of the fruits are sugary such as mangos and pineapple. Then, the sourness is the acidic taste. For example: lemon and vinegar. The third is the salty food; the saltiness is usually the taste of alkali metal ions such as sodium and potassium. The salts are usually found in the sea. Many foods made by a cook contain salt because he/she usually put some salt on it. Furthermore, the bitterness is known as a pungent taste. Example of bitter foods are caffeine, lemon ring and other bitter fruit. Finally, the umami is the Japanese word meaning delicious. Food like salmon and mushrooms are considered as high in umami. Some people are more focused on taste and they forget the most important quality nutrients
