Supply chains covers all aspects involved in delivering the final product or service, from the organisations work activities that should be designed, made and used for the service or product produced. In order for companies to expand and function smoothly, they rely on their supply chain to provide them with what is needed. Value chains used to put more attention on the inside participants which was different for supply chains as they focused on both inside and outside of the organisation.
To move along with the times, value chains would have to be bigger than before and include suppliers and customers which are found at the upstream and downstream of the business. The customers and suppliers added to the value chain are now part of the extended value chain or the extended organisation. This means that in order for the organisation to succeed, the company would have to effectively manage its connected businesses past first-level suppliers and customers.
Improving firms realise that control over costs, value and supply of product or service needs focus from supplier that stay near the production side. The ability to use resources and capabilities that an organisation has ownership over plays a big role in ensuring that the company and its employees achieve the goals and objectives initially set by the organisation. Paying attention to detail is increasingly significant to ensuring that information moves across the supply and value chain system of a business and individuals receive the correct information with regards to what is needed or where things are supposed to be located.
In the supply and value chain, each member has part or role that they play which contributes to the outcome of what is needed or required. When every individual is aware of what is expected from them and what is it that they need to do, it becomes easier to manage and satisfy the consumer or buyer. Investing in employees also is very important as it will provide the organisation with employees that have skills and knowledge and can have new ways on how to improve the supply and value
