Non-verbal communication
Non-Verbal Communication is a way in which information or feelings are transmitted to another person without being spoken or written. It can be defined ‘Behaviour and elements of speech aside from the words themselves that transmit meaning’ (Business Dictionary, 2014).
The first non-verbal communication is posture. Posture is the way in which a person sits or stands which can send messages to people in their company. Posture should be open to make the professional look approachable, also posture includes sitting with a straight back to covey professionalism. An example of how posture can send messages is during an examination in a GP surgery. If the GP is sat with closed posture it can convey nervousness and unprofessionalism

Facial expression is the movement of the eyes, nose, mouth and brows which reveals the emotional state of what someone is feeling. A professional is able to guess the thoughts and feelings of service user by their facial expressions. An example of where facial expressions are used is when a service user is seeing a therapist. The service users facial expressions will help the therapist determine what emotional state their patient is in without the patient actually telling them. The therapist will also have to refrain themselves from using facial expressions as it could cause the service user to stop talking due to them feeling like they are being judged. Facial expressions are important because it promotes effective communication since it helps professionals know when they need to change their approach to something if the service user if they see through facial expressions that their service user is not comfortable or happy with the way they are handling the …show more content…
Respecting silence is particularly important in different situations, being quiet can show that the situation has been interpreted correctly and that the service user’s feelings have been taken into consideration. An example of when silence should be respected is in the case of when someone has died and the doctor gives the service user’s family some time to take in the sad information by being silent and not talk to their colleagues about it in front of the family to show empathy.     Nonverbal communication is anything in a message that is not the word itself (Adams & Galanes, 2006). Nonverbal communication can be anything from facial expressions to body movements. Nonverbal communication took place or at least was more noticeable when my group and I got together, just by observing them I had a clue in which direction to go, but it was my mistake to make decisions based on their body language because of the principles of nonverbal communication.
