Implicit Association Test

Improved Essays
The implicit association test I chose to complete had to do with race. It began with a series of generalized questions which asked about my current attitude with regard to whites and blacks. After that, there was a timed 7-part association response that determined how I felt about each race. The result was surprising as it fell outside my natural attitude toward African-American population.
The outcome of the test suggested that I have a moderate automatic preference for Black people over White people, which is strange since I naturally associate myself with other Caucasians. Moreover, I admit having a slight amount of prejudice toward African-Americans while not discriminating against other Whites, whatsoever. One of the reasons being the

Clearly this is not true and while my personal bias will always play a role in my social outlook, I’ve learned to give every person I meet the benefit of the doubt. This includes treating every person with respect and dignity. Overtime I came to learn that the typical stereotypes aren’t true, yet they do exist and somehow become basis for classification of the entire race. In addition, I believe that my environment and social involvement greatly influenced a former feeling of superiority toward Blacks. Honestly, I’m not sure how to interpret the results as I can’t figure out a plausible explanation as to why I have a moderate preference toward Black people since I expected the results to be the other way around. As the interpretation suggests, my response to the experiment was quicker for the category which consisted of Black people and good words. I suppose it’s because my mind processes the images of African-Americans faster while not being so alerted when a picture of a White person appeared. Moreover, my reaction time to the positive words was quicker than that of the negatives. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that my brain responds quicker to something good than

The primary reason I believe I scored “pro-white”, is because at the starting point of the test, the left side consisted of African Americans and words that were related to “bad” stigmas. Being the left handed person that I am, when the topics switched positions I naturally pressed the key on the left. I generally hardly ever use my right besides typing. I do not think that the Implicit Association Test tells us anything that we do not already know ourselves. If we honestly are somewhat “favoring a particular race”, if you will, we clearly don’t need a computer generated test to determine this for us.…

In this day and age, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to classify people into one race. There is so much of the population that multiple race backgrounds, and it is difficult to determine one’s specific race. I think a huge reason for these obstacles stem from societies becoming accepting to biracial relationships. Now, people are more likely come from multiple race. I found the Race Lab to be surprisingly difficult.…

Upon completion of the Implicit Assessment Test (IAT) my results showed a moderate automatic preference towards Arab/Muslims compared to Other People. I chose that group because in their visibility, they resemble the Gypsies, the other ethnic group that was present in Hungary where I grew up, and were the subject of great deal of racist conflicts. I was raised with the ideals that Gypsies were inferior in their education, work ethics, social status and intelligence. When I came to live in the United States I brought my bias with me and seeing an Arabic person evoked the same feelings in me. After the incidents of 9/11/2001, the face of Arab/Muslims in America became the object of fear and hatred and my already prejudices mind joined the masses…

Racial Dating Preferences & Political Views In the article “Political Ideology and Racial Preferences in Online Dating” By Anderson, Goel, Huber, Malhotra and Watts, we examine a study which was done to examine why people tend to choose same-race relationships and if certain personal and political affiliations influence those choices. Data was gathered using secondary data analysis by anonymizing a snapshot of user activity from a dating website during a 2 month window. Researchers looked for complete profiles. In addition to basic demographic questions, participants we asked a series of questions related to their racial preferences “... those reporting age, sex location, ethnicity, education, income, political ideology, marital…

    Attraction Psychology

The topic being studied in this article was how similarities in attitudes and race effect attraction. The authors wished to find an appropriate approach to increase attraction between specifically black and white people. The authors expected that people white or black who are perceived to have to have similar attitudes would be more attracted to each other than people with dissimilar attitudes regardless of the race. Also, they expected that those with a similar attitude would be more prone to cooperation on a goal that would then lead to attraction and if the goal was accomplished the attraction would become greater. They found their hypothesis to be supported with their evidence with the exception of one, which was that attraction, would increase if the goal was accomplished rather than flustered from dissimilarity.…

The Role of Race In Romantic Attraction to Race in Intercultural Dating Attraction is a popular field of study in psychology. In a mixed society that we exemplify today in America, it is common to see people of multiple races and ethnicities but what influences race and ethnicity have on everyday life such as it pertains to attraction is something that we are still discovering. Looking back in history, interracial communication and living is a new progression. Although the general population may not always consider how races and ethnicities play a role in our procreation and attraction to sexual partners, empirical evidence supports that race effects attraction (McClintock,& Murry, (2010). Observing how race effects attraction, and what effects…

    Implicit Association Test

    I. Introduction a. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is to measure attitudes and beliefs that individuals may be unwilling or unable to be aware of. The IAT can be especially engaging if the results show that an individual may have an implicit attitude that they were unaware of. For an example, someone may consider men and women as equals in association with obligations; however, their initial, automatic associations could show that they, like many, associate men as more career-oriented and women as more family-oriented. The IAT measurements are able to display the strength of these associations between concepts, evaluations, as well as stereotypes. The central idea is to make the individual aware of these responses when closely related…

Through researching colorism and creating a survey the researcher’s goal was to find out if people felt that the education of colorism is important. They also wanted to learn more about people’s experiences with colorism and if they recognize any privilege or disadvantage in different skin tones. Furthermore, the researcher wanted to know how we could, as a community put an end to colorism. In the researcher's survey, the last questions they asked was each person’s sex and race to have some prior background about them, and so they did not base their answers on their race and sex rather than their honest opinions.…

These physical traits included: skin color, blood type, and finger print. One interesting I found from this activity, which was basically a refresher for me, was that not a lot of African-Americans have the blood type AB. The five major races included in this activity were: African-Americans or Blacks, Whites, American Indians, Hispanics, and Asian Americans.…
