Implicit Association Test Report

Decent Essays
After taking the Implicit Association Test, I confirmed that I had no automatic preference between African Americans and European Americans. After learning about attitudes, I thought my conclusions would bring to light some of the explicit attitudes I am consciously aware of; but thankfully the test concluded no huge difference between the two ethnic backgrounds being compared. I honestly grew up in a socially diverse and acceptable environment. I was brought up to learn to love and understand people outside of my ethnic group and appreciate them for the good and bad. In doing this I formed many friendships with different ethnic groups, however, I also learned a lot of stereotypes about ethnic groups that I didn’t notice until my adulthood.

Race, religion, and sexuality weren’t typically a subject of conversation, although I was always interested in learning more about these different ways of life. In my small town, stereotypes more so came as a result of gossip. The common phrase, “Everybody knows everybody,” rang true for my hometown’s population, young or old. Without knowing a person, a local would make an observation of the said person’s personality, reputation or…

The show “Friends” made me think falsely on life, but gladly after time past I started creating a group of friends with different races and languages. Since the show “South Park” stated that gingers are disgusting people; I started to believe that gingers are disgusting people for a period of time. Because I take what I watch on T.V to seriously; I started to look down on gingers and not be friends with them at all. Every time I would see a ginger person I would get disgusted, and not want to look at them because I started to think they are bad disgusting people with no moral to live. I understand now that I should not look down upon someone because of the way they look, and should treat them the way that I would want to be treated.…

The unconscious bias is affected by the environment and the group we are placed in. It also depends on the duration of when one in a specific environment. These associations about race and gender were often beliefs that were developed at a very early age through exposure to various forms of media, people, and the culture one experiences. I believe that my lack of exposure to the various associations in the IAT was the main reason for my slight preference in both the Race and Gender Tests. Growing up in a culture that most males maintain the career aspect of life, whereas females are more involved in the family, I could see why my results of the IAT Gender Test were slightly favorable to the female and family…

Prejudice is learned; it is not an innate characteristic that every child is born with. They learn it from ways in which they are socialized and what they imitate from the people who are constantly around them. According to Diana Kendall, symbolic interactionists believe that prejudice against any racial group is learned socially (Kendall, 2015). More often than not, when African Americans are mentioned in the media, it is usually in the association with a crime. When mentioned in the news…

Growing up in San Jose, California, for example, I was always surrounded by Vietnamese and—to a lesser extent—Filipino students at school. Because my schools were dominated by a Vietnamese population, I tended to drift towards that direction and befriend Vietnamese people. Being Asian was enough to be able to have shared experiences and beliefs with them, yet other parts of their culture I had to learn from them. Slowly, I began to assimilate with the culture of Vietnamese-Americans which has been reinforced through my ideals and experiences shared with friends. Reflecting on my life now, I see that even today a majority of my friends are Vietnamese.…
