Negative attitudes and stereotypes are a part of society; they become bigger issues when these thoughts and beliefs turn into actions, such as discrimination and aggression. Over the last decade strides have been made to change societal ideals and norms but research shows discrimination among particular groups remains high. The purpose of this study was to examine if media exposure correlates with an individual’s implicit associations of weight. For the experiment, twenty-six participants completed a survey on media exposure and a weight implicit association test. The results concluded that there was no correlation between the survey and IAT scores. Between survey and IAT scores, media exposure was not correlated with implicit associations. After taking the Implicit Association Test offered online through Harvard University in collaboration with a few other institutions, I can say that I am somewhat shocked by my results. I took the IAT for automatic preferences of those of European or African decent, essentially my preference of race. In the brief description of the test, it said that the majority of people prefer white over blacks. I thought of myself as being part of the exception group; the very few people who do not fit society 's norms and go against the typical responses. Race is referred to the idea of categorizing human species into groups that shared physical and genetic traits, such as the skin color, facial features and even the hair texture. Based on the “Sorting People” activity that I’ve done, I found that I did poorly on the test. I got only 5 out of 20 questions right. I am actually quiet surprised by this result. Before taking the Implicit Association Test (IAT), I thought that it was an interesting way to test for unconscious prejudice because it shows how different qualities and values are associated with white and black people. I know that I am biased towards both groups in different areas, but I felt nervous before taking the test.
