Implicit Association Test Analysis

The Implicit Association Tests (IAT) has a variety of categories that shows their attitudes or beliefs about certain topics. In the IAT test I participated in it showed my relationship between males and females and their association with family and career. As you can probably guess majority of people had a preference for males and careers and women and family. The results from the IAT test tend to adhere to privilege and stereotypes. This is demonstrating similar results from the video clip, where majority of people had a higher preference for white. This might be a result of our societal norms surrounding white privilege. In the video clip those who favored their own race and were African American were often proud. However when whites were found to favor their own race they were often taken back and surprised by the results. …show more content…
The more times you paired the wrong items the higher your preference was for the opposite. While this test may seem valid it does have several flaws. The first of which is how reliable are the IATs? The first time I took the Gender-Career test I was found to have a slight association of male with career and female with family. However the second time I took this same test my results were opposite. Saying I had a moderate association of females with careers and males with family. In order for tests to be reliable, they must have high repeatability. Meaning that one should be able to retake the same test and obtain similar results. Another flaw with the IAT is that results are easily skewed. The participant may be able to fake their results more favorable to the results they want to see by purposefully getting associations wrong. Which in turn ruins the validity of this test. People can determine the outcome and make themselves seem less bias which goes to show that implicit association tests are not factually
