Implicit Association Study

My results took me by surprise; they were not what I had anticipated. The results presented at the end of the Implicit Association Test were shocking to me; meant to measure the strength of a person's automatic association between mental representations of objects in memory. In this case, I believe there is some truth to these tests but I also feel like the results could be manipulated to be biased in some way because of the way we wire our brain in the first section of the IAT test. We are told that white people and good terms are on the same button; we are then told that black people are placed on the same button for bad terms. We wire our brain for each hand to press right or left for each stimulus to respond accordingly to response. So

    The purpose of this study was to examine if media exposure correlates with an individual’s implicit associations of weight. For the experiment, twenty-six participants completed a survey on media exposure and a weight implicit association test.     The primary reason I believe I scored “pro-white”, is because at the starting point of the test, the left side consisted of African Americans and words that were related to “bad” stigmas. Being the left handed person that I am, when the topics switched positions I naturally pressed the key on the left. I generally hardly ever use my right besides typing. I do not think that the Implicit Association Test tells us anything that we do not already know ourselves.     Compare to Black and White Americans, White Americans would tend to collapse when exposed to disreputable practices. Black and White Americans have a different prejudice that affects different cognitive impairment: “Cognitive impairment was more pronounced when an in-group member was being evaluated by an out-group member than when an out-group member was being evaluated by an in-group member” (Salvatore & Shelton, 2007).     Dr. Laurence Steinberg’s research was a true clarification of racial biases in the subconscious. In using police and probation officers, both categories a mix of black and white, he gave them both identical information on the same crime, but offered no identification of race for the individual doing the crime.
