To the individual
Putting Maslow’s theory in mind, an individual first of all recognizes that he has needs which starts with his continued existence upon which all other needs are based. This consciousness motivates the individual to provide for his ‘basic’ needs so as to continue to stay alive. Man is at first an individual before he is an employee. Even as an employee, he begins to understand what is expected of him. It comes to his awareness that at the beginning of his career, he will strive to fulfill his physiological needs such as getting a job, an adequate wage, and a good salary to meet his immediate needs. He doesn’t even stop there, he continues to think beyond that and onto how he can secure his salary and keep his job to ensure he still meets up with his needs. This pushes him to put in his best at his place of work.

However, the organization should also have some mechanisms in place for the employee to give feedback about ways the organization could also improve itself and make itself a better place to work. Allowing open communication in both directions will keep the employees more satisfied with their performance review and happier their compensation level in relation to their work. As opined by Nyameh (2013) organizations should ensure equity in the distribution of rewards and that rewards meet the expectations of employees. The management must have an efficient delivery system of rewards. Tracking the fulfillment of rewards is important so as not to marginalize any employee. He went further to recommend that the management must clearly lay out a proper system of rewards, recognition and other benefits coherently. Otherwise, the system might backfire – any perceived inconsistency of the system will de-motivate the staff
