Diabetes Mellitus is an endocrine disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels during periods of fasting as well as after consuming a meal. Some of the symptoms of the disease are: thirst, excessive urination, sugar in urine and fatigue. The disease is caused by resistance to the Insulin or inadequate production of the hormone. Insulin is responsible for transporting glucose from the blood into every cell in the body for energy. Diabetes is a chronic disease that causes multiple complications including retinopathy, neuropathy, foot ulcers, and gangrene as well as contributes to heart diseases. In US alone the total cost of treating diabetes in 2013 was $245 billion. The direct medical cost-$ 176 billion (72%). The remaining amount is associated with reduced productivity ($69-28%).
