The rates of suicide among First Nations communities is 5 times higher than the national average. An inquiry found that the girl was cared for by her mother, who suffered from mental illness, she was physically, emotionally and sexually abused. Marmot discussed the factors that play a part in the high suicide rates among aboriginal communities, these include education, quality of social services, the amount of community control, access and quality of health services, and most importantly cultural continuity. What was interesting to learn was that higher rates of cultural continuity in First Nations communities equaled less youth suicide rates. What was more shocking was that the government rarely discusses the impact that the social determinants have on the health of the population. I defiantly believe that the government needs to consider population health, health promotion and the social determinants of health more often as they all have the greatest impact on health.
