Communication is vital in every professional organization. Productivity, effectiveness, and team work cannot happen if communication is absent. In my place of employment communication is necessary as there is many processes that need to be completed, many individuals are responsible for overseeing confidential information and people depend on our services in order to continue to move forward with their school work. However, there are times that it is evident that communication is lacking and expectations are met. Furthermore, communication needs to happen in order to voice expectations. As a supervisor it is crucial that I voice my expectations clearly to ensure my staff is aware of what is needed. In order to be more effective in communication I need to be implementing the mental models. As according to Stephen Robbins and Timothy Judge (2009) mental models are founded by “knowledge and beliefs (p.336).” Customer service is the number one goal in my department and in order to produce a high level of customer service, the internal structure of the department must operate smoothly. All workers must be like-minded, having the same goals and motivations for their work. Furthermore, implementing mental models will …show more content…
Robbins and Judge suggest that the grapevine is compiled of three components; “not controlled by government, perceived by most employees as being more believable, and used to serve the self-interests of other people within it (p.359)”. If this type of communication is implemented in my work environment, I will be able to better assess what my staff is thinking and feeling. Additionally it offers me an opportunity to display how negative gossip or negative talk can have on the work environment. If information is passed from one individual to another, it can at least be positive information as well as beneficial
