Implementing Gun Safety in School Classrooms Seventeen year old Katie Bentley sat in Ms.Newlin’s class just like any other day. Katie had been to multiple schools over the years, but had recently transferred to Monroe. She thought Monroe High was the safest school she had gone to. One day while Katie was in school, she saw a boy with a gun, or at least that’s what she thought. She didn’t tell anyone because she didn’t think gun violence was a big issue, because at all of her other schools she never heard of such a thing. Later that day the administrator got on the school speaker and announced a code red. Everyone started to panic, especially Katie because she saw a gun. A few seconds later, gun shots were heard. Significantly, gun violence has increased over time and safety rules in schools are not meeting the needs of protecting students. Most gun violence caused in schools is because of corporal punishment. Corporal punishment is a type of physical punishment that causes pain. Students who are causing the issue of gun violence in school usually start off with a referral. A referral is an act of referring someone or something for consultation, review, or further action. While teaching gun safety most instructors goals are to teach children hierarchical skills. This means teaching them skills in order of ranks.
