Problems in Nakchu Implementing a microfinance problem in Nakchu, while set out in good intentions at its core, proved to be even more complicated than originally predicted. The TPAF was aware of the pre-context of a project in such an isolated community, but had made the decision a program was worth working through these issues. On a purely geographical scheme, the Northern part of Tibet is historically a nomadic land, with very limited prospects of agricultural development (Stuart et al, n.d, 7). Evidently small, personal loans were not to the benefit of anyone in Nakchu. Thankful in the most recent publication by the organization, this was realized and loans were properly adjusted. Now instead, the loans are given out to large groups and families with an appointed committee that is tasked with running the businesses and distributing the profits (“Epilogue”, Stuart et al, n.d, 1). Typically these groups are actually being defined as whole villages more the small groupings, between roughly 10 to 70 families in a group receiving one loan. Naturally, loans are given through assessing the size and needs of each grouping.These loans were “ranging anywhere from RMB 10,000 to RBM 80,000 ($1,125-$9,720) in the first round” (“Epilogue”, Stuart et al, n.d, 1). This is an important change that allows real progress to be made through the focusing on bigger picture development and problems.
