Surgical removal of orthopaedic hardware/implant used for fracture fixation is one of the most commonly performed surgeries [1]. In 2010, a total of 180,000 hardware removal were performed in Germany, a 4th common surgical procedure among orthopedic surgery after internal fixation, arthroscopies and disc surgery [2].
There is a still debate in literature regarding justification of elective surgical implant removal [3,4].The indication for hardware removal is absolutely and clearly indicated in patients with s infection, loosening of implant, metal allergy, implant failure, soft tissue compromise or non union. This probably was mainly influenced by numerous unwanted complications which can occur during and after implant removal.
The complications after hardware removal are impaired wound healing, infections, refractures, neuro vascular damage, or sometime an incomplete removal. In the literature general conscience is lacking regarding implant removal [6,7,8,9]. Therefore generalized recommendations regarding its removal cannot be established.
The implant removal imposes addition financial burden in developing country like India due to lower socioeconomic status among most of the population where there is less than 20 % population has medical insurance.
Aim of our study was to evaluate specifically the patient’s subjective point of view regarding surgical hardware removal using a generally understandable and self-explanatory questionnaire. We hypothesized, that patients’ satisfaction after implant removal is high because from patient point of view why to keep a metal throughout life if is no more required despite of few associated
