Impetigo is a highly communicable infection caused by the Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria, either alone or in combination. Sometimes erroneously called infantigo, it is the most common dermatologic condition in infants and children, however, it can occur in any age group. Impetigo is readily transmitted via direct skin-to-skin contact. Fomites, such as towels, washcloths, utensils etc also contribute to the spread of the disease.
