First, the battle between the Hutus and Tutsis started with ethnic conflict, which started because of a variety of things. Before the Rwandan Genocide, the Ruanda-Urundi was a part of German East Africa, which was held under the Belgian military from 1916 to 1924. Ruanda-Urundi held the Tutsis and Hutus in one country which soon split into two once Independence was brought into perspective. “The two parts of Ruanda-Urundi became independent in July 1962. There is pressure from the UN to federate as a single nation, but both opt to go their separate ways.”(www.historyworld.net) This quote explains that after Ruanda-Urundi split and the two countries went their separate ways their rivalry officially began, due to the ethnic conflict. Another part, that influenced the start of the Rwandan Genocide was Imperialism. The Rwandan Genocide began in April of 1994 and ended in around mid-July. Over 800,000 people died but the majority was from the Tutsi population. Particularly, the Hutu and Tutsis conflict ended with lots of death from both civilizations. The Tutsi population suffered the most and lost the most, from lives to civilizations. “Tutsi and people suspected of being Tutsi were killed in their homes and as they tried to flee at roadblocks set up across the country during the genocide. Entire families were killed at a time. Women were systematically and brutally raped.”(www.raceandhistory.com) Tutsis were stripped of their pride, land, and rights and suffered, no matter where they were they suffered the high risk of being murdered which resulted in the loss of more than half their population. Next, this quote shows that over half the population of the Tutsi were murdered and even children were victims. “In the weeks after April 6, 1994, 800,000 men, women, and children perished in the Rwandan genocide, perhaps as many as three quarters of the Tutsi population.”(www.history.com) Tutsi men, women, and children suffered because of the Rwandan Genocide and over three quarters of their population died.
