This was a very hard reading for me to fully understand. In some parts of the story I was unclear about certain situations due to the text of the novel. Also “Heart of Darkness” being such a dark story full of racism, imperialism, and constant struggles, I was not the most intrigued. The media that supported this novel helps better enhance the knowledge of the story, or perhaps changes the perspective of the viewer. After watching “Apocalypse Now”, I was able to see the vast similarities in relation to “Heart of Darkness”, which helped me better understand the context of imperialism and the struggles they had faced. Although the film was not identical to the novel, many of its key points were similar, and watching the film made me more aware of the brutality that many of the natives faced. The film being set in a different time zones, can lead to a better or different interpretation of “Heart of Darkness”. In the novel Marlow was a mere onlooker and witnessed Kurtz loose his mind to the practice of imperialism as the Victorian Age had just ended, while Willard was sent out not to oversee Kurtz, but actually restrain him after not following order from superiors in the rise of the Vietnam War. Watching the film, and seeing the novel represented in various forms of media such as photos helps viewers better understand the historical context of the story by seeing what life was like during that period of time.
