In 1958, Sam Zemurray resigns from his position as the head of United Fruit and the new president is Thomas Sunderland. United Fruit began to fall on hard times during the 1960s because of the switch to canned fruits instead of fresh bananas and United Fruit began to have to comply to many anti-trust regulations leading to loss of land. In 1963, United Fruit brought a new president in Herbert Cornuelle As United Fruit fell, they lashed out in order to save their control on Latin America. Just like Arbenz, Castro began to nationalize a lot of land of United Fruit’s, frightening United Fruit into thinking all Central American countries would follow this trend. United Fruit’s already decreasing profit would be destroyed if all of the central americans nationalized their land. The CIA was bound to fail because there was a lack of communication between all of the sectors of the plan. When researching the coup, there is little reference to United Fruit and a lot more focus on the CIA. This is probably due to the failure of the coup and the negative connotation it would bring to United Fruit’s already bad image. On the United Fruit website when discussing their history, this is the reference to the Cuban coup: “A group of Cuban exiles unsuccessfully attempts to invade Cuba and depose Fidel Castro.”.
