Imperfections of History Over the years, the United States has always had controversies arise as time progresses. With technology advancing at a rapid rate, the amounts of historical inaccuracies that appear are tremendous. One of the most famous historical inaccuracies to appear, especially in United States history, is when George Washington crossed the Delaware River. Many historians have speculated the accuracy of the famous painting, drawn by German artist, Emanuel Leutze. Historians have addressed the inaccuracies of the painting, but no actions have been taken to change the status of the painting. Even though the painting has become a major part of American history, it is important

One of them is that the mini-icebergs in the Delaware River did not actually occur. Since Leutze was not born near the Delaware River he could not have historically, accurately depicted his artwork. Mini-icebergs do not form on the Delaware River, but rather a thin ice sheet when it gets cold enough. According to Corey Kilgannon, who interviewed Mort Künstler, a painter who is known for his historical images, said, “Leutze did not shy away from imbuing the scene with a dose of glory, inspiration and heroism” (Kilgannon). The mini-icebergs were exaggerated because Leutze needed to evoke a sense of heroism to portray Washington’s journey as a brave decision. Leutze needed the Europeans to see this portrait and ask themselves if they can create change like Washington did, but to do so he needed to exaggerate the …show more content…
The painting depicts a man holding the American flag, which did not happen at the time. Hamon states, “the flag depicted was not created until about a year after the battle” (Hamon). Hamon clearly states that the flag did not exist during the time of the crossing of the Delaware. According to the website, Archiving Early America, “Notice that it is the flag commonly referred to as “The Stars and Stripes. This flag did not exist at the time Washington made his famous crossing” (Corssing). “The flag in Leutze’s painting was not adopted until June 14, 1777. Leutze should have shown the Grand Union flag” (Crossing). The flag in the painting was called, “The Stars and Strips Flag” and that flag was not adopted until the following year. The real flag during the revolutionary war was called, “The Grand Union Flag.” A reason Leutze might have added that flag was so the Europeans could identify the men on the boats as American. Leutze could not have known about the flags because he drew the painting 75 years later and it did not help that he drew it in Germany. How was he going to

In Past Imperfect: Facts, Fictions, Fraud—American History from Bancroft and Parkman to Ambrose, Bellesiles, Ellis, and Goodwin, Peter Charles Hoffer, a professor of history at the University of Georgia and former member of the American Historical Association 's Professional Division, discusses the issue of professional and ethical misconduct in the field of history. Hoffer analyzes the four cases of Ambrose, Bellesiles, Ellis, and Goodwin, and notes that developments within the field of history have affected historians. Such cases of falsification and plagiarism were not surprising, but, in fact, “predictable, perhaps even inevitable,” influenced by the “always contested evolution of historical writing in America” (ix). Therefore, Hoffer has two goals in the writing of this text. The…

The neoclassic artistic style began about the same time as the start of the age of enlightenment in the mid 18th century. Neoclassical art favored the simplicity and symmetry of Ancient Greece and Rome and viewed the Rococo style it displaced as immoral. Neoclassical artists thought art should be more cerebral and less sensual and viewed drawing as more important than painting. Neoclassical art with its strong lines, muted colors, and lack of visible brush strokes create images which appear to be timeless. Romanticism immediately followed the neoclassic period and began in France about the time of the French Revolution.…

Incompatible? One of the most well-known pictures of the revolutionary war, painted by Emanuel Leutze almost a hundred years after, depicts a scene where George Washington stoically stands on a boat leading the troops across the frozen Delaware River. The American flag wraps around itself in the frozen wind, some troops are holding their hats, while others are paddling the claustrophobic wooden crafts. One guy even pushes a mini iceberg away with a stick so the boat can pass through the murky frozen waters.…

From the book Reading the American Past by Michael P. Johnson, we can know that after the civil war, the Republicans in the Congress took a break and the African Americans weren't actually “freed.” They were not given their land at the beginning of Reconstruction; they still had to work on the plantations, with the only difference being blacks would receive wages and the outlawing of whipping. Then the Democrats established a Black Code that allowed the whites to treat African Americans much like when slavery is around. Within legendary author, Ernest Hemingway’s work, a concept called the Iceberg Theory is present. The Iceberg Theory is the concept that within a story, only twenty percent of the information is directly written, the rest is not given straight to the reader, but the meaning is there. Much like an iceberg, with the majority of it underwater. This theory is demonstrated effectively through Hemingway’s short stories.…

We have sent a man to the moon, we can get to somewhere miles away in minutes, and we can communicate with someone from across the globe almost instantaneously. These are just a few examples of the fantastic technology that we have developed that allows us to do things that our ancestors could never have even dreamed of. Surely, civilization as we know it is far superior to the pre-neolithic people. Well, according to John Lanchester’s article, “A Case Against Civilization,” our perceived achievements is nothing to be proud of. Walter Benjamin, a great German Jewish cultural critic, once said that every complicated and beautiful thing humanity ever made has, if you look at it long enough, shows a shadow, a history of oppression, and Lanchester’s…

For many Americans, the American flag symbolizes the core values of this nation: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is considered to be impertinent and discourteous if any individual belittle the symbolical meaning. Similar to the game of telephone, the more history is spoken, the more times it is altered. Although history is not actually changed itself, the way it is perceived is. A monumental myth of a historian that has had a few folktales about him, is the first President of the United States, George Washington. Washington was claimed to have chopped down a cherry tree at a young age and then later used the tree to make himself a set of wooden teeth. As children, often this story was reiterated.…

Papers from figures like William Henry Harrison would naturally cast a biased shadow upon the Natives and may have been elaborated upon in order to produce favor for the Americans. At best, all accounts by the author are historically accurate; at worst, they contain misinformation.
