The article that I have chosen for this essay is “Impaired-Driving Prevalence Among US High School Students: Associations with Substance Use and Risky Driving Behaviors”, by Kaigang Li, Bruce G. Simons-Morton, and Ralph Hingson. The social problem that researchers are investigating in this article is the association between risky driving and driving while intoxicated or impaired (DWI) or riding with an alcohol or drug impaired driver (RWI). During the teenage period, most teens are learning to drive and at the same time, they are beginning to use drugs and alcohol even more. This leads to teenagers drinking and using illegal drugs while driving or riding. Researchers used probability sampling and survey questionnaires to investigate the association between risky driving and driving while intoxicated or impaired or riding with an alcohol or drug impaired driver among US high school students. The 2,431 participants of the research were 11th- grade US adolescents from the 2010-2011 school year. The article also mentions that researchers “examined the variability in the prevalence of driving while intoxicated or impaired (DWI) and riding with an alcohol or drug impaired driver (RWI) among adolescents by demographic factors.” In order to provide an acceptable sample to observe racial or ethnic differences, researcher decided to oversample black participants if their parents gave consent.
