Impaired driving is one of the most leading causes of death, as stated by MADD Canada: “Impaired driving remains the leading criminal cause of death in Canada, and accounts for 43% of all deaths occurring as a result of road crashes.” (MADD Canada 2014). Accidents resulting from impaired driving can lead to lives being lost and/or to permanent injury, whether it be physical or mental. There are also several severe legal consequences to drinking and driving. Impaired driving also has lasting negative psychological effects on family members and friends of those who have been involved in driving under the influence. The demographic most affected by impaired driving is youth: “While 16-25 years olds constituted only 13.7% of the Canadian population …show more content…
The Article also pointed out in the first six years following the MADD Canada report cards there had been more than 65 legislative changes. (MADD Canada) This is a large success for MADD Canada as within 6 years they had made changes to the legislation which indicated that the movement was working. Also the formation of MADD started in about 1982, extensive research demonstrates that at this period and until 1996, there was a decrease in drunk driving fatalities in Ontario. MADD Canada has created these societies with common beliefs, values, norms, sanctions and symbols that characterize the society into a common culture. The beliefs of the societies that back up MADD Canada are pretty substantial, eliminate drunk driving. Since drunk driving is a social problem, the societies believe it must be eliminated from existence. The values in the society depict what is good or bad and it became obvious that impaired driving is not encrypted in any one’s values. It is a undesirable situation that occurs. The norms in the society for individuals against impaired driving are self evident. Binge drinking, drug consumption, and other forms of substance abuse are not good for oneself and must not be abused. There is also the law that has helped abolish impaired driving, and MADD has made changes to the legislation that helps societies feel more safe in their communities. MADD’s sanctions have made differences in society, as impaired driving is not condoned therefore an individual will be penalized by law if caught doing so. MADD has also made their name prevalent amongst societies, individuals are aware of the name either by ‘MADD’ or ‘Mothers Against Drunk Driving.’ They have also created the symbol with a crossed out wine class and keys.
