One of the challenges in the essay by Joan Didion "On Keeping a Notebook" was keeping up with the story, it was unpredictable. My impression at first was a young girl who recievced her first notebook at the age of five years old, as an adult would document her thoughts or even worked on homework. To discover that the notebook had nothing to do with what I had intially assumed. I think Joan would be an outstanding jounalist. Another challange I came arcross was in the essay By Joel, to help a co-worker persuade his potiniel date for the prom Joel printed out a sonnet from Shakespears, I thought that Joel went out of his way to help his fellow co-worker.…

Well known for her research and publications on student writing, Nancy Sommers—now Harvard’s Expository Writing Program Director—discusses the student’s revision strategies on her journal College Composition and Communication: a compilation of some of her articles. Throughout this essay, I will be focusing on three articles from Nancy 's journal: Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) with Laura Saltz as cowriter, Between the Drafts (1992), and the Novice as Expert (2004). Revision Strategies of Student Writers and Experienced Adult Writers (1980) juxtaposes through a case study the revision strategies of first-year college students and experienced writers. Between the Drafts (1992) narrates her personal experience with revision strategies. The Novice as Expert: Writing the freshmen (2004) examines how first-year college students—Sommers believes— should approach writing.…
Joseph Harris’s "Revising," published in 2006 in Rewriting: How to Do Things with Texts, claims that the revising and rewriting is an active attempt to keep the conversation going, and a generous use of the work of others. To make his point, Harris distinguishes the differences between revising and editing. And also explains to readers specifically that how these two writing stages different by several samples of student writings with responses. In this article, these examples illustrate how students can incorporate the prior four moves within drafts.…

Getting the attention of kindergarteners can be hard sometimes, one way to grab their short attention is by telling them a secret. VanNess starts one of her first writing lessons by telling her students a secret and that secret is that “kindergarteners can write!” (574) When she tells her students they can write, she sees faces light up all around her. VanNess starts out the lessons with something simple and gives some examples of ways to use the word I. She models with the students and once they start to get comfortable with the word she releases them to do it on their own.…
Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) has guided me, a 49 year-old college sophomore, to utilize my academic grit in order to mentor other students, and past experiences to succeed in my educational and career goal as a visual healing artist. My 25 years of medical experience are rooted in my professional goal to be a visual healing artist. Mentors of my previous medical profession ranged from surgeons, doctors, and firemen to patients and their families, all of which helped me learn about human anatomy, kinesiology, and compassion for humanity. My medical career started over 25 years ago as an administrative assistant. I worked my way up the medical professional chain from my emergency medical technician (EMT) certification, registered dental assistant, x-ray technician, surgical technician, medical administrator of insurance billing and surgery scheduling, to an insurance agent of life and health, disability and long term care.…
In her book, The Writing Life, Annie Dillard depicts her personal writing process, and she explains it using comparisons such as similes, metaphors, personifications, and other types of figurative language. Sometimes she specifically states her writing process while at other times she uses an example of something else as a description of her writing. The goal of her writing is to help others understand why she writes, and at the same time, she encourages and teaches them how to write. Throughout her book, Dillard explains her writing process, and uses multiple styles of writing to create a vivid picture of her writing. In her book, Annie Dillard discusses what she needs in order to accomplish her work and be a successful writer.…
This week, I had the privilege to read and respond to Tori’s response to Brooks’ essay. She mainly discussed how she believes that the students in the writing consultations should be doing most of, if not all of the work. Tori discussed the importance of the environment created in the Writing Center, as well as the power of student-centered work. While her essay was very strong in the points she brought out of his essay and analyzed thoroughly, I believe that she could have gone more into depth in examples as to what she discussed.…
How We Spend Our Lives “When you write, you lay out a line of words. The line of words is a miner’s pick, a woodcarver’s gouge, a surgeon’s probe. You wield it, and it digs a path you follow. Soon you find yourself deep in new territory.” (qtd.…
During one of the sessions with her teacher. She realized she needed to add more detail in her writing. Instead of writing," my dad went to the store to pick up dinner" say, "my dad sprinted to the store, sweat dripping down his exasperated face as he approached the last sizzling rotisserie chicken the customers were fighting for." Those details is what makes the writing piece entertaining for the reader. She also began to read higher level literature so she can advance her vocabulary to improve her writing even more.…
From this point on she has tried to write as many essays,…
