I spent my time washing and painting graffiti off of buildings, cleaning the parks, and serving food to the community. Engaging and reading with the neighborhood children was a highlight of the week. The impact…
With Veterans Memorial High School opening up towards the beginning of my sophomore year; it put multiple kids from different background together into one school. In the origination of the school, it was quite difficult to put aside the previous student body loyalties, biases, and come together to create something worth lasting which has never happened before. I saw this task at hand and I decided I wanted to take part in uniting this school. I would play a part in creating a future for the next generations that have come and yet to come. Bringing people together and creating a sense of unity in such a divided world plays off when I look back and see how hard I worked in the making of that community.…
Volunteering for not only school events, but for the Manitowoc community made myself aware of the changes a group of people can do to improve their community and the lives of those in need. Service has brought to my attention how one act of selflessness,…
Because I am a young adult my influence in younger minds will have a large impact, when I come home from college over breaks, I’m hoping to continue my service among the community. By doing so, I hope that my actions will affect those younger than me to take action. Currently, I am tutoring after school, as much as I can with Mrs.Smith 5th grade class. Every time I go over there I see how much they look up to me, they constantly ask me questions about high school and life. Although I won’t be there for the kids next year, I hope they take what I’ve taught them about life, and school and apply that to their future lives.…
That helped me look at life in a simpler way, and taught me to put aside anything I was going through to make this young student’s day. I’ve also had the chance to see the unfairness of the world impacting those in my community when I volunteered at two Center for Human Development (CHD) programs. I have helped out at the Grace House, a program for mothers who are in recovery from addiction, and their children. I’ve also helped at a farm share held for homeless families in CHD shelters, which provides them with free…
I needed solutions. Looking forward to starting my graduate studies that fall in the Minority and Urban Education program at the University of Maryland, College Park, I knew right away what I wanted to focus on. But as I began my research, I became dissatisfied with the lack of gender- and race-based studies done for Black girls in urban education settings. We were trapped in the intersection of race and gender—where studies on Black youth primarily focused on issues centered on Black boys and the studies on girls mainly focused on the challenges faced by White girls. All the literature I read up to this point implied that Black girls were doing just fine, simply because their suspension rates were slightly lower than their male counterparts and their graduation rates were slightly higher.…
Whether it be teaching young dancers at my ballet studio, tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club, or giving out water during a football practice, I find joy in giving back to the community. Few things in life are more precious than the ability to harvest a passion in another person. You do not have to be the most talented person in your field, but you must have the desire to make an impact. I turn my passions into a ministry and it is there that I am able to have my greatest successes. I have been blessed with numerous opportunities to be successful in and out of the classroom.…
We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…
1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher. Last year, I sat in on my aunt’s third grade class at Washington Irving, an elementary school in my district that I attended for three years. After visiting the classroom a handful of times, I absolutely fell in love.…
With this in mind, I started my own class at a community park. Starting my own class helped me give back to my community by helping…
My Community Prompt: What have you done to make your school or your community a better place? I have done a few things here and there that have impacted my community in a positive mater. For example, I currently live in a little city named San Bernardino, it is the second poorest city in California.…
What have you done to make your school or your community a better place? 370 “With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it don 't seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together.” This quote from the recent film Hacksaw Ridge embodies my sentiment that brightening up someone’s day is the best feeling in the world for me. This desire to help others prompted me to volunteer for two years at UCLA hospital to help transport patients. Hospital patients often deal with severe pain and sometimes loneliness, and I knew that giving some of my time could improve their moods and outlooks.…
My experiences of being a part of the School of Education can be summarized by this quote, “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn” (Benjamin Franklin). From the beginning of my education courses, I was able to see the importance of being involved in education. As a teacher it is important to get to know your students in order to help them to reach their full potential.…
Be very consistent. In your teaching and it will really draw your students to you. 4. Almost…
I spent hours after school interacting with my students and their families in the comfort of their homes. It took time, perseverance, reflection, learning, and a lot more un-learning, to realise that I had to treat and teach every student differently. During these visits, I learnt that Ruman loved drawing, that Afsar was a great football player and that Sana taught her neighbours how to dance. I took my learnings back into the classroom and started incorporating art, dance and sports while teaching. These small changes had a huge impact on my class, but honestly, the class had its biggest impact on…
