The Impact of the 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report on the Future of Nursing in Education, Practice and leadership
This paper seeks to expand upon the 2010 Institute of Medicine’s report on the future of nursing, leading change, advancing health and illustrating its impact on nursing education, practice and leadership. There is an ongoing transformation in the healthcare system necessitated by the need to achieve a high quality patient ad family centered care in the community, public and primary care settings where nurses contribute as essential partners in achieving success. Report focused on three main pillars for change-
.Advancing education transformation
.Removing barrier to practice and care

Computer skills and information management are required for nurses in order to keep up with technological advancement in the medical field. The need for highly educated nurses and improved education system are must to keep up with drastic changes and challenges in the healthcare field. we are in the 21st century where the nation is experience a lot of new trends and challenges in health, most especially as the population of older people is said to continue to increase in decades fast approaching, which also indicated simultaneous change and increase in types of disease conditions like diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, cardiovascular and mental illness. While these disease conditions dictate type of health care needed today, the quality of education possessed by our nurses which centers on acute care is no longer adequate, hence nurses need more education to increase their competencies in research, evidence based practice, system improvement, teamwork approach among, collaboration with other professionals, creation of health policies and adopting a more leadership role to be able to deliver efficient quality care as needed in the more complex environment of care, in the community, public health and …show more content…
The IOM committee determined that such constraints will have to be lifted in order for nurses to assume the responsibilities they can and should be taking during this time of great need. A lot of advance practice registered nurses (APRNS), entering the work force today with a more qualified education, also encounter lot of problems from physicians in different states across the nation, challenging their scope of practice and under the impression, that the autonomy of the nurse in practice will threaten their professional roles. Not taking into consideration how useful these nurses and their knowledge will be, in contributing to an innovative healthcare system that is moving towards community, public, and primary care. Current nurses should look into pursuing professional development now regardless of their age. As a registered nurse working in different departments in my carrier , I will use my knowledge acquired from continuous education to gain a leadership position where I can collaborate with other nursing professionals to influence legislation and federal government, who through the congress, federal trade commission , office of personal management, and the center of Medicaid and
