Some consider talking about suicide as a taboo subject, no-one wants to talk about the subject and more often most people can’t talk about it, as it can be often to raw or the hurt hasn’t quite healed.

With the growing population, rates did come down, but those most likely to take their own lives, those rates have started to increase. In New Zealand, approximately 500 have taken their own lives. Many more people are attempting suicide or they may be experiencing levels of distress which places them at high risk of suicide, which they will affect the lives of many others (Te Rau Matatini.2016).
Health and Social issues are serious issues around suicide. Suicide is a serious health and social issue. Of the population, Mental Health and Social well-being are signs of suicide rates. Suicide is an act when someone wants to intentionally kill one’s self. are a sign of the mental health and social well-being of the population. Classification of death in New Zealand, is based on a coroner’s findings (Te Rau Matatini.2016).
The suicide causes are very complex. There are many factors associated with suicide, such as issues relating to sexual identity, deprivation, a background of an abusive family and stresses in daily life. Knowing the signs and preparing yourself to hear the things that you don’t really want to hear is all part of their healing process. (Mental Health Foundation New Zealand 2016). Te Rau Matatini is one of the many organisations that takes part in the development of suicide prevention training and prevention programmes for Māori and their communities. Statistics show that 1 in 5 people who die from suicide are Māori, Te Rau Matatini supply the tools and resources to help whanau and the communities to help prevent suicide. (Ministry Of Health 2016)
In 2006 the Ministry of Health along with the Mental Health Foundation,worked alongside the Taumata Hauora Trust, to develop a suicide prevention coping tools for Māori. Te Rau Matatini in 2007 was asked to gather information from the consultation hui and from that hii was asked to produce a summary report. Te Rau Matatini was also asked to test and complete a suicide prevention resource with a community based focus which would help Māori communities in the prevention of suicide and suicide attempts with all ages.
