From personal experiences I have had a counselor who could not separate the church from the counseling. She would bring in religious aspects the few times I went to her, and it was not something I brought up myself. Yes, I chose to go to such a place, however I did not know that religion was going to be the main theme of the sessions with this particular counselor. That experience has colored my view of counseling in religious aspects in such a way that I struggle with believing that counselors can keep their personal values of religion out of the session. Dwight could also struggle with the clients who come from outside of the congregation in keeping his personal values out of the session.…
It is especially important as Christian counselors to affirm to sound biblical theology when dealing with matters such as the example of Tom and Amy. I feel that a Christian counselor must be an expert in both traditional psychological methods and in Biblical Hermeneutics. Hermeneutics defined in my own words is being able to look at scripture by removing personal bias and looking at the historical, biblical, literacy, cultural, sociological norms, norms. Of the original authors time period, and the one in which you reside in.…

Compare and Contrast Larry Crabb's Christian Counseling Methods with Albert Ellis and Carl Rogers Secular Methods Daniel Coffman Liberty University Part I: Goal of Christian Counseling As I am writing this I am reminded of a conversation I had with someone in my Church that is involved with our Addiction Ministry. He started to tell me of an attendee in one of the Friday night group counseling sessions that was more discouraged when they left the meeting than when they came in. I was curious at the approach the group took and wanted to know what the facilitator does to foster an environment where people can and will talk about their issues.…

H. Norman Wright’s book taught me how to better prepare myself for when a crisis occurs. He teaches us about many different types of crisis from the crisis of death to the crisis of children. Dr. Wright (2011) teaches his readers how and when to integrate spirituality and religion when counseling someone in crisis. This helped me a great deal. As a counselor I have always felt uneasy when wanting to introduce spirituality and religion into my counseling setting.…
This advice has a significant impact on Christian counselors in the sense that the integration process is seemingly not difficult, however, it can cause complications. Introduction Secular and Christian counseling share similar ideas in how emotional and psychological struggles should be addressed; however, there are also key differences between the two. In this paper, we will review cognitive-behavioral therapy, Rogerian therapy, and rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT), examining how they compare and contrast to a Christian view of counseling. By comparing and contrasting these views we will see that although some of the secular techniques are useful for biblical counseling, it is of much greater benefit to utilize biblical principles. Goals of Counseling According to Crabb (1977), in Christian counseling there is an ultimate goal, which is spiritual maturity.…
One area that was especially helpful, was the authors focus on making sure that there is a solid foundation in theology and making sure there is adequate training in using Scripture in a counseling practice. One problem with in Christianity is the lack of knowledge when it comes to Scripture and theology. Many just accept what they are told when it comes to theology and Scripture instead of taking time to actually learn about theology and how to properly quote or use Scripture while they are talking. Due to this, Scripture can be misused or misquoted and shows a lack of knowledge of the users part. The author’s advice to make sure a person is adequately trained in these areas is not only necessary but also…
