Reflection Paper: The Impact Of Gateway Experiences

Impact of Gateway Experiences: My University College Gateway course experience is one that I may never forget. I knew I would enjoy this course after my one-one interaction with my teacher’s assistant Vu. Talking with Vu made me realize that everyone one here was just like me, a student who is here to get a degree and that sometimes things may get rough but there are plenty of resources to help you make it through. Not only did my professor and TA challenge me to think ahead, but the projects did as well. The Education and Career Planning Projects encouraged me to research what I want to do later on in life and the steps I would have to take in order to make it happen. Just like any other course Gateway consisted of home work. At first I thought …show more content…
For instance, our Reflective Writing for Chapter 9 showed me how important it was to budget and save, especially while I am a college student. By writing out my expenses I was able to how much money I spent on certain things and how I can cut back if I need to. By attending class every week, I was able to find out many different things that are offered on campus. For instance, one of our classes was held in the Goddard Health Center. At the Goddard Health Center I was informed that I could go and get medical help for free or at a discounted price. My classmates and I also got to participate in a friendly little competition, to see how much we actually knew about health and what was considered healthy. The visit to the Goddard Health Center turned out to be more fun that I thought it would be. We also had wonderful speaking events happen inside the classroom. A presentation titled Study Abroad informed about the three major centers that OU had overseas. Being able to take classes in Rio De Janero, Brazil or Pueblo, Mexico, or even Arezzo, Italy seems so fascinating. Although I would be way across the ocean, it would still seem as if I am on the OU Norman campus, …show more content…
One issue that I would like to solve is the fear of education challenges. Prior to my attendance here at the university, I would constantly hear how hard the work is. This caused a lot of my classmates to shy from the University of Oklahoma due to the fact that they were afraid of not being able to meet their standards. In order to solve this issue I believe that a group of students should participate in community service and give potential OU students a presentation about what they went through their first year of college and how they managed to make it through. This will give students the opportunity to see that people just like them made it through and they can as

“Homeless on Campus” In the magazine article “Homeless on Campus”, Bader uses pathos and ethos to help inform the audience about the plight of homeless college students, and bring them to attention. The article was mainly directed at college administrators and educators, and secondly to people who worked in financial aid. For the college administrators and educators, this would help bring attention to their homeless and poverty ridden students and to persuade them to do more to help them out. For the financial aid advisors, it would convince them to provide more options and opportunities for these students.…

For example, the idea of communicating with a professor through email or text messaging. Being formal and asking only questions is something that can make the relationship between student and teacher successful. Also I enjoyed learning about the behaviors of how not to act during class, and how to be an engaged learner and a good note takes. The idea of how to make people like you also stuck out to me, and made me think of how I can just simply listen to what others have to say and just smile and relate to what they are saying and this will make them feel more understood and welcomed as a friend. Lastly, the one topic that I thoroughly took to heart was the idea of preparing for a lecture before the lesson.…

A few months after my arrival, my English enhanced dramatically because of my teacher’s motivation and guidance; she encouraged me with her stories about learning English. In order for me to tell my story, I need to think about the rhetorical situation. With the completion of my essay, I was able to achieve the Course Learning Outcomes after I wrote my story.…

After touring Georgia College, I became excited for the future ahead of me. I can visualize myself draped in a dark robe, standing on a stage to receive my diploma, thinking nostalgically of the memories I hold with GCSU. I think of the clubs I involved myself in such as environmental initiatives and community service clubs. I notice my peers who helped me to succeed, regardless of how overwhelmed I sometimes felt, who encouraged me and reminded me of my strengths. I reflect on the semester I spent abroad to embrace the Spanish culture and language.…

Community service has always been a priority in my life, with this scholarship I will have more time and freedom to pursue my philanthropic goals. As a Diversity Scholar I currently volunteer 10- 12 hours a year for the Department of Community Engagement and Multicultural center on campus. Yet, due to my demanding work schedule I am unable to participate in many other community service projects. However, if selected for the Shawn Carter foundation scholarship I plan to meet the 25hr/ of community service requirement by joining the Diversity Outreach Team, Volunteering at the Campus food pantry, and Participating in Alternative Spring break. Life's a journey worth taking the unbeaten path. That is why, despite looking up to my loving parents and having the utmost respect for them, I have taken a different road than they did. However, undergoing any challenge without their guiding experience can certainly prove to be an undertaking. I, a first generation college student, am the pioneer of higher education for my family. Though I join many others in lunging out into the world for the first time, I am doing so without having a father or mother to tell me how to tackle the college experience.…

I first attended Appalachian about 15 years ago, entering in the class of 2000. Due to personal and family events, I wasn't able to graduate, so I am getting my second chance now, at both a degree and and the valuable experiences that being involved with the community and networking with others can bring. The one thing I did learn from my previous collge experience, both at Appalachain and at the community college I currently attend, is how much value comes from the colege experience outside of class - connecting with others who have different life experiences, and learning and doing things together to improve ourselves and the community. Since I intend to major in Communications/Journalism, I am looking forward to getting involved with student…

The campus issue I chose to focus on is student retention and how it correlates with the socio-economic status of the student. I chose this topic and study group because it is very closely related to the field I currently work in, and I can get some hand on experiences while working through this semester. I currently work for the Student Success and Persistence department where we work towards helping student retention campus wide for first year college students. Since I work at a community college a vast majority of our students are nontraditional and are not straight out of high school. I feel this will be a great learning experience for me in this course, and in the professional field.…
