Crime data is released by many cities but there is inconsistent information available on the Criminal Justice related data at an individual level. There is little awareness on how much of the data is available and accessible. There are many statistical tables and other released data that could form a basis for innovation in the Criminal Justice System. Converting this data into meaningful stories, data visualizations, apps and more will meet the high demand for access to and better understanding of this information by the general public, researchers, developers, NGO’s, journalists and many other groups within the Criminal Justice System.

A variety of information is collected by the Criminal Justice agencies which is used in multiple ways. A visualization could provide a clear understanding of the current systems is crucial to shaping new or existing policies and improving the process of justice administration. Police could use this information to identify hot spots; judges could use it when they impose sentences; victim assistance staff could use it to provide better services, An arrestee’s family could use it to understand the steps in the process and be equipped to deal with the situation.
Crime analysts who use these data often could convey their message in a way that is not only engaging but also easy to understand for laymen audiences, such as legislators, mayors,and district attorneys in addition to general public, who need the data to make informed …show more content…
Using different persona’s created with unique attributes to map this process, an individual's data path with all the relevant data attributes will be displayed in this visualization.
The Criminal Justice System is complex, hence, the scope of the project is restricted to the Arrest - Pretrial in the Criminal Justice System. There are 3 major reasons to restricting the research and visualization to this phase.
The Arrest-PreTrial period is where maximum number of data attributes are collected which is evident from the arrest and booking form.
Once an individual enters the trial phase, the jury, judge, DA and Defense Attorney use their own discretion in presenting and interpreting data leading to major challenges in mapping that data.
The trial phase heavily relies on US Constitutional Laws, which vary with nature and severity of the crime and could have multiple loopholes which could pose a huge challenge to visualize. (Need to frame this
