In 1863 President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared free slaves in the Confederacy but not on the Union. This affected the politics of the United states because many people did not want slavery to end. This where people that had power over the government of the Confederacy and some over the Union. Also they were part of the Government many of them had the last word on important decisions like laws. For example the United States Supreme Court in the 1857 Dred Scott Decision ruled that slaves were subhuman property with no rights of citizenship this was a law against the slaves. Also They did not want slavery to end because it was going to hurt the economy and political because slaves brought a lot of income to the south and also to the north by working for the white people. Because slavery was at the heart of American expansion during the first half of the nineteenth century. Also when the cotton gin, the plantation slavery boomed. Southern planters and would-be planters looked westward for new lands, and the internal slave trade from the Upper South supplied hundreds of thousands of slaves to fertile cotton lands in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. This meant that slaves holders had to buy more slaves to produces cotton, tobacco and crops so the slaves holder could become richer and wealthy. Also the south depended on slavery to keep the growth of their farms, and plantation good. Also during the civil war the south and the north used slaves to fight and that saved money but mainly the south used slaves in civil war. Also when the north was losing the war Lincoln freed
