However, that is not always the case because not every nation has the option to choose their leaders and a regime that was once great may begin to sour over time. For example, when the 13 colonies were created, Great Britain had the ultimate authority over their rules and taxes. The laws that they imposed were unfair and became very unpopular among the colonists, leading them to rebel. In this case, authority was forced upon its citizens and was a cause for rebellion. This turned out to be one of the most patriotic events in history since it unified the colonies and led to the creation of a new country. Also, a leader that was once popular and charismatic may abuse power once in office and be unfit for the position. Napoleon Bonaparte, who rose through the ranks of the French army, was a charming and admired leader immediately following the French revolution. The citizens were loyal to him while he was successful in the conquering of many countries, but his winning streak slowly faded. He became egotistical from his many victories and began to weaken. Bonaparte soon proved to be a threat to the French people when Europe united against him; even those who were loyal to him realized that he was not the leader they wanted, and he was exiled. Authority that appears to be competent can sometimes surprise the citizens with their foolishness and low moral fiber, leaving the citizens no choice but remove them from their position. The power over a country can be both given and taken by the people, and they have a right to distribute and withdraw that authority as they see
