First, the impact it has in my family socioeconomic status. As many immigrant families, we come with expectations to improve our economic situation. In fact, in our native countries is difficult to have the necessary resources to live a dignified life. The work that my parents did in Mexico was from working in the field to work in factories. The lower classes usually are those that have to work more because of low wages. This is one of the reasons, which hundreds of people decide to immigrate to the United States. However, when one comes here we expect more job opportunities, but unfortunately, our illegal status prevents us from getting good jobs. Most of the immigrants work as caregivers, janitors, and house cleaners among many other jobs. For example, my family and I have our own businesses of selling flowers. However, since we can’t get our own flower shop, we have to sell flowers on the streets and restaurants. Unfortunately, be an immigrant person, not only causes physical and economic stress, but also mental stress for family members. Many immigrants as my family arrive in this country carrying the traditions, norms, and values from their homeland. In my case, my culture comes from a patriarchal society, which includes rigid divisions of labor for men and women, and power and authority establish by men. As we recall from class there are some aspects of immigration commonly bring patriarchal ideas into question. The first aspect involves men migrating, while their families remain in their home. This can be related to when my dad had to immigrate to the United States first. Since he was the head of the household he was responsible for seeking resources outside our homeland. My mother had to stay with us in Mexico while my dad sent money to the house. However, when immigrant women come to the United States, we can see the second and third aspect which involves immigrant women’s employment and its effects on gender relations and how the income that woman earns reduce the power gap between men and women. For instance, when my mother came to this country in comparison to our homeland, she is forced to get into the labor force to help increase the economy of the house. She went from being a housewife to do different jobs such as cleaning houses, babysitting and currently selling flowers.
