After reading Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario, my understanding of the topic of immigration has increased somewhat. I see both pro and con on the issue. In this essay I will be responding to the question: “Is immigration good for the migrants themselves? Is it good for the countries from which they are migrating?” (277) and explain both of the sides in the following paragraphs. There are several negative effects to immigration. In the Epilogue of the book, the author shares what happens to Belky, the sister who received more money and had more schooling, or in other terms, the child who was supposed to succeed: “Belky never finishes college. Enrique came to the United States to find his mother Lourdes and have a “Perfect family” how Enrique “face rejection and constant fights” other children like Enrique “Act out, doing everything possible to push their mothers away. It is their way of testing whether their mothers really love them, whether they can trust them, whether their mothers will abandon them again” (280). Many of the immigrants take the view “of another migrant: Moses leading the Jews out of slavery in Egypt, parting the Red Sea, entering Jordan, to the promised land” (270). Lots of the migrants go in with positive hopes and thoughts. Immigrants come wanting to work and make a life in America. The money that they make in the United States doesn’t just help themselves but family members back home: “The money Lourdes sent Enrique allowed him food, clothing, and to attend school longer” Even in the United States life is better “Enrique drove his own pickup truck and could make a decent living if he worked hard. The risk of the con arguments are higher than the benefits, and most of the benefits go to sleazy corporate offices or big time farmers. I don’t know if you were wondering or not, but I didn’t write down any quotes after the “Notes” section of the book because I realized that she’s wrote about all of those things in previous chapters. I’m pretty sure Sonia has written about the same gang violence statistic but just said it a different way each time, and now finally, to show emphasis, she uses numbers! Some parts of the conversation that she wrote down, she has also wrote in previous passages. Those facts aside, I believe what Amanda Rives from World Vision says, “The humanitarian crisis must be acted upon not just at the U.S. border, but also in the countries where these children are escaping from. The only way to stop these children from running to the U.S. is to address the root causes and establish an effective safety net for children,”. America is taking too much of the blame for this issue while Mexico and other Central American countries just sit back and act like this is our problem. Many of the migrants came expecting a happy life, like the commercial Enrique saw on TV in the beginning of the book about Disney world. However the dangers of getting to the United States and even staying there are too intense. Many risk their lives to get out of the cruel life they have been living back
