Community Observation Essay

Improved Essays
My group’s social issue topic is about immigration and ethnic group diversity so I chose to do an observation of my hometown, University Park, Illinois and how diverse it has grown to become in the last decade. This observation took place November 1-3, 2015 in the GSU cafeteria annex and local restaurants in U.P. I was able to speak with a few citizens who too have lived here just as long as I have. The people I was able to speak with were two Palestine siblings who study medicine here at Governors State University and a group of young African American boys who attend Crete Monee High School. (I will not be disclosing any names of these participants at their request.) Growing up I noticed University Park was mostly populated with African Americans …show more content…
They went on to explain to me that it was their parents who lived in The State of Palestine, Israel as children but migrated to America for “greater opportunities” in “the land of free”, how ironic. The siblings said they have faced more than a handful of prejudice and racism especially in their family owned convenient store P.K.’s Pantry in U.P. A common unpopular opinion that Americas have is immigration is the reason for the economic decline but it is those who have migrated here who have started the many businesses we use every day. My initial question for them was, how do they feel about society claiming it is immigrates and those of the ethnic groups who are the cause for our failing economic system but speaking with them opened my mind to a broader spectrum. I, myself, have experienced my fair share of prejudice but as a Palestine in America post 9/11 is obviously much harsher than my situation. Discrimination roots mostly from white supremacist who have preconceived notions that “white is right” and those who are different most be wrong so they force those beliefs and opinions on to people like the Palestine siblings and their family making it hard for them to live their lives peacefully. After speaking with the siblings I was able to learn about their family history and how it has affected them as well as how society’s ideas about them has affected

In compiling the Tables of Facts for Fall River and Massachusetts, I was able to garner insight into the demographic profile of my community and my state that has changed how I understand the two. The backyard of the apartment where I lived until high school shared a fence with one of several public housing projects in Fall River. Although my immediate family was predominantly white, my neighborhood was not, and through that lens I came to understand Fall River as a racially diverse community. The large public high school that I attended was, as much as I could tell, just as diverse.…

The town that I grew up in is known for being a very diverse town – the high school that I graduated from back in Clifton, New Jersey, had around 3,300 students enrolled from many different backgrounds, races, nationalities, class, and religions. Walking through the hallway of Clifton High School one would hear many different languages and see many people who look exceptionally different from one another. Because the high school had many students from different backgrounds and wanted the students to be well aware and accepting of this, the school offered various clubs and organizations such as: sports teams, French, Spanish, and Italian clubs, a cheerleading team, and even a pep band. These clubs and organizations allowed many students of different…

In contrast to this, Skokie has a 65.6% white population. He seemed to be the only Asian-American that I saw that day, and really stuck out.…

When you get this letter 10 years will have passed since I was in your position. I never really considered that I had a racist bone in my body. I mean, most if not all of my friends then were minorities of some sort, and I got along just fine with them. But subconsciously I began to notice that the successes of minorities irritated me because part of me believed I was better than they were. So I began to try to find ways to justify my superiority so that I could avoid the reality that if I didn’t really start cracking down I would lose out to people of color.…

Federal Way is a highly diverse city and community. Further, I have spent the past four years attending one of the most diverse schools in the nation, where everyone with different cultural backgrounds come together with one goal, to graduate high school. There are a variety of cultural aspects of Federal Way as a community that has influenced my growth as an individual. Specifically, within the high school itself, every Monday through Friday I walk the halls to each class knowing that I am not a part of the minority of the school. For example, I come from an Asian family, as both of my parents came to America as immigrants, my father from Vietnam and my mother from Lao.…
