Immigrants That Influenced My Life

As an immigrant, I have lived a financially difficult life when my father gambled away our home, savings, and the life we had in Iowa and decided to leave us in Georgia. Overnight my mother was granted custody of my two sisters and I and became a single parent/head of household after more than 12 years of being a stay at home mom. With minimal English and no work experience, my mom initially worked for less than minimum wage jobs, food catering company during the day; where her income was based on how much production/food she completed for the day, cleaning corporate companies at night, and even cleaning people’s homes on the weekends to provide for the family. I now know ultimately helping my family in the long run means I need to do what makes me happy; and helping people that are less fortunate than I was is what motivates me to become better. When I started taking classes again to prepare for graduate school, I have already been graduated for a while and I knew the challenges that would come with competing with a younger, intellectual, driven crowd. It was definitely a challenge, but overall rewarding experience, because I met professors who not only stimulated my mind to think out of the box, but have taught me to believe in myself, and that hard work does pay off. Anytime my family runs into a situation I felt like I had to pick up all the pieces and fix it, but this past year my mom has been my backbone. She has encouraged and supported me to stop focusing on everything and everyone else and to pursue my goals and dreams. I know dedicating the next four years of life to dental school may be a challenge, and undoubtedly, paying for dental school will be a hardship in itself, however, I know not every person gets a second chance.
