Immigrants Learn New Language

Many newspapers write about how immigrants learn new language, and what challenges they face. Everyone is different which means that everyone has a different learning style. Some people learn best by reading/writing. Also, some people are hands on learning which means practicing the language. Two years ago when I first came to the USA, I learned English by having conversations with my coworkers, and my friends, through different internet sites, and going to Northern Virginia community college, all of which wasn’t easy but helped me to have a better life.

First, the best way that helped me to learn English was communication. I came to the USA in 02/01/2015, and I lived in my aunt’s house which is located in Maryland. By that time,

Technology played a huge part in learning English. That was my second preferred method to learn English. When I was working in McCormick’s& schmicks, I faced too many new words, and the first thing I used to do is to check the meanings of the words in my cell phone by using Google translator. Also, I used Google translator to help me with pronunciation. Some words took me one day to learn how to pronounce them, while other words took me two weeks to know how to pronounce them. Also, I used my computer to look up some websites with great designs, organized to help me with pronunciation, and to learn new synonyms. I used to watch some videos in English to practice listening, and try to understand what is in the context. Another way helped me a lot to learn English was going to Northern Virginia Community College. I heard about NOVA from my friends, and from my sister. They described NOVA for me, they told me NOVA has huge buildings with great designs. NOVA has green gardens, and the gardens are smelly. Also, NOVA has great learning resources. I decided to apply for NOVA, I looked up the website which was really attractive. Then I went to NOVA Annandale because I heard it was the biggest campus. I applied for NOVA in March 2016. They asked me there to take the English placement test. I took the English …show more content…
I faced a lot of challenges in learning English. It wasn’t easy to learn English. It took me a lot of effort, and time. My life became a better life financially, and mentally. First, I am able to speak English with other people. When I watch any American movie, I can understand it. I am able to find better jobs because I speak the spoken language for example, I started working at McDonalds, and then I got a job at McCormick’s &schmicks. Also, I worked at fresh market, and they offered me to be assistant department manager. These days I am able to make new friends easily without any obstacles because I am able to understand them. Also, I am able to express my emotions and feelings better because I learned new fancy words. The biggest result of learning English is I am able to continue my education, and continue in my major. Also, learning English got me to have bigger goals for example, I am looking to finish a couple of certifications in cybersecurity this year.
